Insurance cover: Mauri, Senegal, Gambia, on a GS.
Just a few days away from setting off ..... just couple of queries. Looking for info/advice from those of you in the know.
I'll be returning from Gambia via Senegal & Mauri, back into Morocco.
I understand that bike insurance cover can be purchased at the borders.
Would it be wise/more cost-effective to purchase insurance at the borders going south for a sufficient time period to also provide me with valid cover for the return leg?
Anybody any ideas on cost? (rather like asking how long is a piece of string, I know! but would give me some pointers as to when to a blatant rip-off was being attempted! Riding a BM GS)
Lastly, can anybody confirm that a 30 day RIM Visa extension can be purchased at Nouadihbou? and where? Police station? (Recall seeing a post on here a bit back suggesting this was so, but can't track it down)
Any info very much appreciated.

It was Nouackchott, not NDB. I also can't find the thread, but I had saved the waypoint mentioned which is N18 05.418 W15 58.257
I paid CFA 10250 for a month's cover in Senegal. This was from an insurance broker in Saint-Louis and is probably cheaper than getting it at the border. There's a 'brown card' carte brune scheme that covers Senegal and countries south, so you might be able to get one policy that covers Senegal and Gambia together.
In the end I paid UM2500 for cover in Mauri. It seems there's not much difference between several days cover and longer, so it might work out cheaper to get one policy that covers both directions.
Good luck at the borders.
Tim

Just dont purchase insurance in Senagal and when you get pulled over Tim will appear as if by magic and show you not only where to buy insurance but he will give your mate a lift to go and get it while you look after the bike!!!!!!!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
