I've read it on different forums : Since 1st of January 1000$(cash,per person) is needed to enter in Lybia .

Is that figure of $1000 not related to the cost of a guide in Libya?

I've heard some people paying that amount for a guide, own transport for the guide, and all visa paperwork. It is my understanding that this is the upper limit of guide costs.

This is why there are a few threads of us trying to get together to share these costs.

it's true! You must have that

- 1000 $ or adequately Euros are necessary
- travelers cheques, and somethin like that will not be accepted
- 1000 $ rule also applies to children, regardless of age
- 1000 $ may not be used for the payment of Libyan travel agencies used, they must be present during inspections

There is also something new with the passport translation:

- translation must be made with a rubber stamp in the passport. - -translations on an glued paper are not valid.
- english left, right Arabic
- Entries and translation by a sworn translator who his entries in the form confirmes and stamps his entries (his stamp partially overlap the "rubber stamp")

Just come back from Libya, no mention at any stage of the EUR650 requirement (although we were prepared for the question).

We had no problem with translation on glued paper as long as we had translator's stamp overlaping the paper and the passport.

Came through the border yesterday. Not even a mention of this requirement. Although we used a guide and did not even see an official at all, just waited in the car park for about 30 minutes while they did their stuff, fitted our arabic plates and hit the road.

You won't tell us that your Tour Operator did not inform you that the "1'000.- Rule" has been withdrawn more than two weeks ago?

As usual , there little difficulties about what you need and what you don't need to enter Lybia : 1000$ ? ; translation on a glue paper or directly with stamp on passeport ; guide mandatory to made a tarnsit to Egypt ?
I understand that some laws are sometimes well enforced (or not) , but what are the laws ?
So , keep in mind the worst solution .... and inch'allah !

It's often frustrating when you read official regulations regarding crossing a particular border, because they change all the time and sometimes simply get tossed aside at the border.

For instance, officially, the Canadian embassy must provide the stamp in my passport for translation (I'm Canadian, duh) and then I must find a translator approved by the Libyan embassy to fill in the details and stamp their approval to the text. Well, the Libyan embassy in Cairo insisted that the Canadian embassy do the entire translation, and the Canadians insisted that they wouldn't. In the end, I got the stamp from Canada with the Arabic fields left blank, then I had a guy at my hostel do the translation (without benefit of an official stamp) and it worked.

Others in my party (that recently crossed from Egypt to Tunisia through Libya) downloaded a translation from the internet, put the sticker in the passport themselves, then found an "official looking" rubber stamp, and that worked too... a complete forgery!

In fact, out of the six of us that crossed the border into Libya, three of us had a least one piece of official documentation that was fake. Dicey! But we were desperate.

And, no, we were never asked about $1,000 in currency.
