Marseille - Tunis

Can anyone tell me how reliable this ferry is?
IE planning a trip for next year, the only real major tumbling block is how to get into Africa and have heard rumours (all over the web) that this is one of the better ferries to get.

Just wanting to know if it will still be running next year and if it runs most weeks or if parts of the year are better/worse

its not a massively long trip, heading to the Gambia (probably - might go a little further south) so we can fly the bikes back

reliable.......

Reliable?

Don't forget that "sometimes" they are "surprise" strikes due to unions (CGT) in the port of Marseille or of the ferry company (SNCM)
I'm French and I NEVER choose to take a SNCM ferry in Marseille.
I choose Genova.

Tunis ferry

CTN Ferries Compagnie Tunisienne de Navigation
operate from Marseille and Genoa to Tunis.

Have only been delayed once in 6 years by strikes - maybe I'm lucky? The crossing from Genoa is slightly cheaper.

The ferry is running as normal and you can book online

Happy trails,

Jojo

Genoa is an option I suppose
we are planning on just bombing through europe in a day maybe 2 (if genoa)

whilst I'm here what is Algeria like for riding in? We are looking for a doable route, but one that will take us off road regularly (whilst en route, although rest days will involve play I am sure)

Anything we need to know?

We have never ridden in Africa before hence only doing a shorter trip

Think of getting to the Gambia via Nigier, Bukina Faso, Mali, Senegal, The Gambia - open to thoughts and opinions.

Any resources on petrol stations available?

Actually Marseille or Genoa are almost the same distance - just more borders and Swiss motorway card costs on the later.

Dont know about strikes, but Marseille is like any regular ferry, IME. Always leaves an hour or two late but arrives on time. Genoa is the same, but finding a way to the port drives me nuts.

Anything we need to know?
• You need escorts in Algeria (~€150/day) - see link below
• Alg-Niger is said to be too risky at the moment. - see other link below
• Fuel in south Alg is no drama - usually around 200-250km, 400km max (Tam to IGZ border post).

Alg is of course a great place to ride.

Would it not be better to go across to Morocco, and then south? Given there is just loads of hassle south of Morocco, why add to the problems beforehand?

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
