Hmm. When I went through the WS/Mali border in 2008 there was a team of four Gibraltar-registered mine clearance 4WDs heading south.
The last reported mine incident was Feb 2007 when a French guy decided to follow the old 'Spanish tarmac' halfway through. I think I've seen that bit of tarmac leading off to the east and it looked very appealing.

So what with mines, terrorists, kidnapping, executions and pepper spray discussions, Western Sahara, Mauri, Mali, Niger, Timbouctou etc look decidedly 'interesting' for 2010.
