Mines in SW Libya

Hello,

I am planning on doing some geology field work in SW Libya in February, and I am wondering if anyone has any updated mine information.

We will be working east of Al Qatrun in the Jabel Bin Ghanimah area (west of Ramlet al Wigh and Waw an Namus).

From what I have read in Sahara Overland and seen on other websites, the landmines seem to be the biggest concern further toward the east. Is this true?

I appreciate any information that anyone might have.

Thanks,
fc

Hi Fatcat

I strongly suggest to contact the Dahiliya (interior) Ministry for the updated info required where a special branch is deputed to all concern land mines and relative safety .This oportunity will be allowed to You if You have a regular registered contract for geophisical surweys . Working without the official steeps required may get You in serious troubles.

Take note also note that most of the infos provvided, as above, by independent travellers, or found on guides books, either to be unreliable to valuate and give the point to the true danger occuring, often there concurs or are misleadind to more dangerous situations.

This kind of news or report freely staded and given on a pure hasard basis's cannot have of course the necessary land mine's experience and knowledge of the several local and unlocal "factors" that may change the emplacement of a single mine in a day or in a month, some miles further or closer.
Valsella ( plastic mine's bodies of italian production ) seems perfect to fulfill this pick up job.

Not sure I fully comprehend all of the above (a reverse Babelfish might help) but if landmines in Libya are able to move around by themselves then we're better off avoiding the place altogether!!

Hi Scott

Sure that the use of Babelfish would be helpful to translate from the local arabic websites and so allow us illustrate better the multiple reasons that made possible that mines may change their original first emplacement during their lifetime , but it is a pointless argument besides traveller’s safety is internationally hopped and since our aim is only to give reliable, authoritative and correct advices on how to travel safely in our Great Arab Jamahiriyah .

So, about this irksome eventuality that ,unluckily happens in some hot boundaries area of south Libya, as also in others hottest places of Sahara as the world it is better to know than avoiding it or losing time in well written exposition since, and moreover, most of Saharan travellers are aware - or want’t -to be of this matter .

This is one among the others reasons of the compulsory guide’s use , firstly and strongly recommended in Libya to avoid deadly case occurred and followed by most of Saharan countries , all in the respect to the safety regulation against international terrorism nowadays worldwide requested and that luckily doesn’t need to have recourse to babelfish to illustrate.

My recommendation: do your diggging in the Akakus - even if you don't find anyhting, the scenery at least will be stunning!

;-)

Great people too.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
