They don't have many on the course, not enough to make any real use of anyway.
most waypoints are at CP's or villages etc

Yes I know, but I want to test those pistas Last year I was drive by one 2002 Dakar stage it was hard to finish it....

There are two ways to get a day's Dakar route

1. hope a competitor from last year is reading this and decides to donate a road book.

2. go to a bivoac and just ask a competitor for that day's old road book, most just get thrown away especially one's for the 'easier' moroccon stages.

When testing last september we used some from the Orpi maroc 2003 through the erg chebbi and another from Mhamid to foum zguid
both tough day's.

copying them is a real pain as they are in small books and would take ages.

unless your car or bike is race prepared and has the fuel range then you will only be able to do portions of the course.

I collect them when I see them, I have optic 2000, Orpi maroc and Dakar routes of varies years, they make excellent slow trail routes as the people who make them use microlight planes to find really good tracks

Thanks! I try from polish bike team ORLENTEAM. I'm TTQV Touratech software owner. I try to move roadbook paths to GPS waypoints.

This years dakar books are still in the ship on there way back from Dakar( if they haven't been stolen by the dock hands)

does anyone think that the organisations may be against copying these roadbooks?
they aren't worried about the return of them anyway but there must be some copyright legal issues about them.
does anyone know of a scanner with a continues feed? like a dot matrix printer but a scanner instaed?
A person wishing to copy the bike road books could just run them through it, nice and easy

Just returned from Dakar 04. Some Road books available for both Competition (Some) and Assistance (All) Vehicles if someone wants to cover the cost of reproduction (I have a feeding scanner and printer).
I would suggest caution following most competition routes as they assume that support can be called upon from organisers and/or assistance crews - some are incredibly hard (though mainly Mauritanian routes). Distances this year were some of the longest/toughest, though many single day stages could be split comfortably. There were more GPS references this year due to Speed traps being incorporated into GPS units, but references were in some cases up to 10km out with no explanation.

are they going try again?

one of the Bajas in spain ,portugal or Italy is probably better suited to the FL.

The Freelander hit trouble on the first long stage in Morocco. We knew the car was not really at optimum preparation (problems had even emerged in Clermont-Ferrand) and suspected it would not get all the way to Dakar, but dropping out this early was a disspointment. The crew were slightly off course (but nothing to worry about) on entering the Erg Chebib, they then landed badly causing damage to transmission and could not get closer to the main route of the stage to get help. The truck in our team was called in, and the assistance vehicle, but the truck could not pull the vehicle out either. Locals managed to get the car to the nearest town ~150km after nearly 36 hours and two failed attempts with two tractors - but (hard & expensive) lessons were learnt!
They are already planning another attack next year, but are likely to go for a different car. I am confident that the Freelander could have made it, but only with extensive modification and the kind of repairs/maintenance that the works teams apply every night. As the Freelander is not homologated anyway, it could almost be turned into a full-spec buggy anyway.... but at a significant cost!
