Morocco - Fair-haired and Female
I am heading off through Eastern Europe and thenback across and dropping down through Spain to Morocco for a couple of weeks. I finally get the chance to pull out some summer singlets, then get to Morocco and have to cover up! Aaaarg!
I need some advice though please: What is appropriate attire for a woman in Morocco - Is a round neck t-shirt and long pants okay? What's a general rule of thumb? Cover knees and elbows?
Will I be able to get a bit of sun on my shoulders in the camp site?
(sorry - naive about this I'm afraid, so appreciate advice and suggestions)

It depends where you are - your suggestion would be OK anywhere, but you don't really need to go that far in places like Marrakesh or Essaouira (which is beautiful - try it). I was there with a female friend a short while ago and in country areas she wore a long thin skirt. Don't worry about the elbows, but a thin headscarf might be helpful just occasionally - just helps blend in a bit. But it is not necessary. We did not see the sort of harrassment which is common in Turkey - well, only from people trying to sell you things or drag you in to their shops. She also found unwanted lipstick very useful when negotiating prices with female sellers - henna tattooists for example.

Hi Shells
I lived 3 years in Marocco, female and blond.
Look around how the moroccan women are dressed - especially those of your age. There are places in towns and on the beach were you can see minis or bikinis and full covered females side by side.

Thank you! You've both helped to make me feel less anxious about it.
A head scarf and a spare lipstick is a good idea (not that I'm packing any other lippy)
... I have been to Turkey, and that's probably why I was concerned. Floaty long skirt, here I come!

I was hoping to get there and see what the women were wearing and then send a guy mate out to go shopping for me now THAT'S trust!

Legs and shoulders are considered 'private' body parts, so in more rural places you should avoid sleeveless T-shirts and shorts.

In the big towns things are more relaxed. French women have never been particularly sensitive to local sensitivites, even to the extent of topless sunbathing by the pool in the more upmarket hotels in Marrakech.
