We travelled Amsterdam - Cape Town with Discman connected to our car radio via a cassette, it works until it breaks (which, in our case was after 8 months or so).
Next time I would install the 10-CD exchange unit that we left at home. The roads have been bad but not that bad actually. If you mount the CD-changer in a (relative) dust free position you will have no problems.
As far as the solar panels are concerned; we met a German couple who were not very content, somehow the panels stoped working or the connection went bad or something. Nice solution but not to reliable.
We carried two aux. batteries (24 V) and this was usually enough for three days with light, music and 42 ltr fridge running. Probably cheaper as well...?
Cheers, Jan.
