Niger trip report
Hi,
I’ve just returned from a 15-day trip to SE Niger (3800km). We went doing fieldwork in the Termit & Tin Toumma National Nature and Cultural Reserve, with support from the local NGO Antilopes Sahélo-Sahariennes (Projet Antilopes Sahélo-Sahariennes au Niger). This is the the most recent and largest protected area of Africa (for comparison, about the size of Portugal)
We landed at Niamey and followed by paved road to Zinder. From there we travelled in two vehicles with an armed escort of three military. From Zinder, we headed to Diffa, Nguigmi, Agadem, crossed the Tin-Toumma desert to the Termit massif, and from there back to Zinder and Niamey.
Overall, we had no problems. In the region of Diffa/Nguigmi there are reported activities of Boko Haram extremists and the military were quire nervous. North of Nguigmi and up to the Homodji plateaux there are many oil prospection and extraction activities by Chinese companies. Lots of tracks and marks ruined most of the landscape.
From Homodji to Agadem and westwards to Termit there are no tracks or marks and you make your own route. Dunes were not especially steep but the sand was very soft in various occasions. From Agadem to Termit we followed a corridor between tall dunes, which facilitated progression. Termit mountain is clearly a sanctuary for wildlife, where it can be found Dorcas and Dama gazelles, Addax, Barbary sheep, and Cheetah.
Cheers,
José

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
