From Niger to Tunisia through Algeria with a Citroen 2CV in february 2007

Hello,

I am currently doing a trip with a Citroen 2CV (not quite a motor bike but still a flat twin!) from France to India by Africa.
I now need to reach Tunisia from Niger and thus need to cross Algeria. I say it as if it bored me. It doesn't, I know it's great but it seems more complicated and more expensive than other countries).

I planned to leave Agadez on february 6th to reach Tamanrasset and then northern Algerai to Tunisia.

I am looking :
- For people doing the same trip at the same time to share things (happiness, problems, and costs)
- For recent and accurate information of any kind about this trip

Here is a non exhaustive list of the information i am looking for :
- How is the road from Agadez to Tam ? Is it easy/reasonable/difficult/impossible to do it with a Citroen 2CV? How long should it take ?
- Is there (never/sometimes/often/always) fuel (but not diesel, the other one that is leaded or unleaded) in the following places : Agadez ? Arlit ? In Guezzam ? Tamanrasset ?
- It is possible to get a 7 days transit visa for Algeria in Agadez with an invitation letter but : is it possible to renew it late in Tam or elsewhere (because it's almost impossible for my 2CV to cross Algeria in 7 days) ? Is it possible to get directly a 1 month visa in Niger (in Agadez or in Niamey) ?
- From where to where is a guide obligatory in Algeria ? up to Tam ? Up to Ghardaia ? If I stay a few days in Tam, do I need a guide there ?
- What are the classical prices of a guide : from Niger border to Tam ? from Tam to Ghardaia ? Who is the cheapest guide ?
- Any other relevant information ?

Thank you Chris Scott for your book because there is one page on the 2CV, because i learn a lot, because i laugh even more.

Etienne,
You and I met on the road to Dahkla when your Citroen broke down. I had a blue BMW motorcycle.
Anyways, I'm in Ougadougou and and will be heading out the exact time you were thinking of. I came down with Malaria last week, so I slowed down a bit.
Lets share the cost of the guide and drive from Agadez to Tam together.
I will contact you via email as well.
Glad to hear you are still en route!

Good to hear from you Edde

I am glad to hear from you Edde,

especially now that I know you had Malaria. Hope you fully recovered.
I am in Ouaga too right now!
I was so sorry I lost you in Dakhla (i could not come at the restaurant meeting point cause i had to repair my cardan)
I then had more problems with my cardan and even an accident that slowed me a few days in south morocco.
It's incredible you reappear now.
I am leaving for Pama Park (east Burkina) tomorrow, then Niamey (around 1st february), then Agadez (around 5th february).
If we don't get in touch before, we should meet in Agadez around 5th february.

Looking forward to seeing your BM again !

Etienne

Note for Chris : How I wish I had listened to you.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
