Niger Visa
I have done a search, but can only find info from 2001 - 2006, which is a bit old.
Anyone gotten a visa for Niger recently in Burkina/Ouagadougou or at the boarder???
What's the procedure, cost and time involved???

Will be riding down via Morocco, Mauritania, Mali and Burkina Faso.
If you have gotten a Niger Visa in any of those countries, I would be interested in hearing from you.

In 2008 we entered Niger by car from Burkina at the border post of Tera (Northern Burkina), without prior visas. Border procedures were quick and friendly. We were given permission to enter Niger with the obligation of getting a proper visa in Niamey within 24 hours. Again, no problem, the visa was issued within 2-3 hours in Niamey.

Why not get the visa before you leave? Surely that would be a lot less worry and hassle?

AFAIR I've gotten Niger visas in Accra and Ouagadougou. Both were easy and reasonably cheap. The VTE doesn't seem to work for Niger, despite the fact that it's supposed to--this based on secondhand information.

I've entered Niger twice on visa touristique entente, both times the visa was issued by another country's consulate, and both times Niger was the first country of entry into the VTE space for me. No problems, no questions asked. The VTE sticker does list all the countries covered by the visa, and that definitely includes Niger.

In theory, you need 15 prior visas for a Transafrica trip. In practice, you need only 1 or 2 (Nigeria, Gabon)!

Now, if you are a theoretic, your passport will go from one embassy to the next in your capital city for 15 weeks and you will fill out 15 forms and try to get 10 invitation letters. You will pay a visa agency to do the running. In addition you will need a second passport for your other travels while the first one makes the embassy tour. More often than not, your home country is the most difficult place to get the visa!

If you are a practicioner, you will learn that border guards can turn you away even if you have the visa "before you leave". And you will learn to get the Visa On Arrival without problems, in most countries.

The same logic applies to the Carnet de Passage. Rarely needed.

And for Travel Warnings. Rarely relevant.

All three are imaginations of bureaucrats who feed off a system that - fortunately - rarely passes the reality check. But most people don't find out about this little secret - because they "worry" ...

Ah well, so much for secondhand information! I've never found a consulate which will sell me a VTE: most recently, I arrived at the Accra Togo embassy the day after they had stopped issuing them.

A tight schedule, so don't really have time to get to the boarder to be turned back.
Getting a visa in my home country- well, easier said than done as there isn't a Niger Embassy.

Thanks for the tips anyhow..........

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
