Oops - brought back Algerian Dinars I can’t change

So, if anyone was to do something ridiculous like plan a trip to Algeria, let me know because I’ve accidentally brought back about £100 of local currency ????*♀️

The rate I got wasn’t fantastic as I had the “pleasure” of a police escort for the first 24 hours or so. Kinda made it awkward to get money changed on the street and I ended up at the bank.

I got about 146 to the Euro.

Ouch, not so good.
Afaict, the 'black market' in Alg is hardly clandestine, sold openly at the airport and with rate fluctuations discussed in the national press.
I bet if you had asked a cop he'd have directed you to a place (jewellers, phone shops, ask around) or done it for himself.
But first time in Alg that might feel a bit sketchy ;-)

If anyone needs a place for 250/€ near Oran port, PM me or Ed Gill who found it.
As it's OK with Ed, I can add that the Google map embedded on this page IDs the spot - it's where the route to Tindouf starts

My favourite spot of all time for a black market money exchange. A row of womenswear shops…only selling a few used and soiled dresses and shoes, clearly as a front for the said currency exchange. And right next to the Spanish Consulate, so in plain side of the permanent and substantial police guard there too.

I have the guys number if anyone is heading via Oran and wants to arrange to meet him, to save time. DM me if you’d like it.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
