Salt Caravan Niger 11-13
Hi Everyone,
I thought I'd share with all of you a pic taken by a friend Tuareg a couple of weeks ago of a large salt caravan outside Fachi (Niger). It seems as though despite all the instability in the Sahara, is business as usual for the local Tuareg. I personally think we should all celebrate such traditions continuing. Well done!!! Any thoughts or feedback welcome! Cheers, Alberto

:palm: Salt is gold in the Sahara
Thanks a lot for your interest!
Happy to know that the picture, which was taken a couple of weeks ago by a Tuareg friend who was driving past the oasis of Fachi in the middle of the Tenere Desert (Niger), is generating some interest. You can find more info about the salt caravans in Niger in the website of the Bradshaw Foundation: The Tuareg Salt Caravans of Niger Africa
You can send me an e-mail and I will send you information about how to get there. The only thing you must keep in mind is that at the moment the area is not safe for tourists.
Best,
Alberto

Video feed Camel Salt Caravan
We were lucky enough to bump into a caravan on our way from Agadez to Bilma, crossing the Tenere desert. You can find the video feed here at around 9.00 minutes.

Niger, opening up?
Hi Luca,
Thanks a lot for your e-mail and interest in the subject of the camel caravans in Niger. It seems as though Niger is once again slowly opening up to visitors. I was told by my Tuareg friend that American tourists were present in the Air festival over a month ago. You are most welcome to send me an e-mail. Can you send me an e-mail via the forum? Sorry I do not know how the system works. Let me know.
Best
Alberto

Does anybody know whether the security situation has improved in central Niger (Agadez, Bilma)? I'm looking into joining a salt caravan for a leg. I wasn't able to find independent information. Are tourists slowly coming back to the Tenere/Air?

No improvement as far as I know - certainly not east of Agadez.
No heard of anyone going there for years.
