Security Egypt and Ferries from Europe to Egypt

Hi all,

I am planning a trip end of February with the motorbike to Sudan and further down. I want to start in Germany, however I do not have a clue about security in Egypt these days? Are their any problems? Traveling only with convoys? Any extra costs? Sufficient petrol on the main roads? The German Foreign Ministry is warning against traveling in the Sahara etc. due to security problems.

Do you have any advice concerning ferry, probably from Italy to Egypt (Alexandria)? As far as I could find out the usual ferry Visemar lines is currently not operating. Are there any alternatives?

Thank you to all of you for reliable information.

Lalli

I would have assumed foreigners are not targets in Egypt (as they are elsewhere in North Africa), but I just saw this:
Gunmen kidnap two Americans, one Egyptian in Sinai - EGYPT - FRANCE 24

This thread has more on Egypt.

The only alt to Visemar is container shipping - much discouraged in Egypt I am told - or flying the bike.

I imagine the German Foreign Ministry is warning against travel in other Saharan regions, not especially Egypt.

egypt

hi,
we're currently in egypt, dahab at the moment.
the venice-alex ferry is cancelled, so the onyl other alternative would be a ferry to israel... but then you cant get sudanese visa anymore.
egypt is ok for riding. white desert pretty relaxed. petrol available in most places. even cairo seems ok if you dont go downtown.
how about riding through syria? still not possible?

cheers

I guess you haven't been following the news.
Things are just getting hotter and hotter in Syria.

Thumbs up safety in egypt

hi
I just come back from egypt. Staying in Maadi and in the Western Desert we had no problems at all. Fuel in Cairo, Bahariya, Farafra and Dakhla possible.
We met no tourists in the Gilf Kebir region during 3 weeks!

Hi Ursula,

I suppose you don't drive in Egypt with your own car this time, I'm right?

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
