Situation Tibesti – Tenere - Air
Hi all,
Anyone knows how the situation is in the Tibesti – Tenere – Air.
Is it is possible to cross from the Tibesti (Zouar) into Niger (Seguedine).
Are guides for this areas obligatory?
Cheers
Michel

I have not heard of a tourist taking this route for many many years - maybe even since the 1980s.
From what I hear, it will be hard to avoid the requirement for guides in north Chad and Tenere, let alone other dangers.

Once in Zouar I suppose it should be no problem to go from there to Bilma. More or less safe, I supose, apart from landmines. But in Air and Tenere you have a big chance being robbed, or worse. Normally you need a permit from Ndjamena to travel to Zouar. Do not know how difficult it is. I am trying to organise one in november, will let you know if I get it.

Even Al-Qaeda members are afraid of going there, because they(tubu rebels) kidnap everybody. (no joke)

Spazi Avventura from Italy is organising trips to Tibesti. No problem, they say. Zouar is a bit more difficult, because it was occupied by rebels for ten years, but now there's a peace agreement. According to my guide it is possible to have a permit to travel from Ndjamena to Zouar (and Faya and Fada). We will see if it is true.

Couple of years ago someone posted a trip report on the Lonely Planet Africa (Thorntree) forum after crossing that area. I think his name was Radi, although I might mis-remember this. It sounded a bit hair-raising for my taste, but then again tastes differ. You might try looking for that post.
Hope that helps.
