Sudan
I'm planning overlanding to South Africa from December 2001 onwards and I was wondering whether any recent travellers have experienced lengthy delays or problematical border conditions in relation to Sudan, and between Egypt and Ethiopia via Sudan.
One more thing, does anyone know of any good way (i.e. taking a boat on the Red Sea from Egypt to Ethiopia avoiding Sudan)apart from flying or shipping the vehicles as freight?

HI
We are also looking for the same information and are travelling the same route . We had a reply from someone who could not get through but he told us about people who went from Jeddah to Port Sudan for $80 and had no problems but that still did not answer the question of Sudan to Ethiopia. If you get any news please pass it on to us or visa versa

May I ask why you want to avoid Sudan? I've heard mainly positive things about the country / people.
Best regards,
Erik D.

Hi,
I currently live in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
I have met a few overlanders over the last couple of months who have come to Ethiopia via Sudan. The routes they have used to Sudan include from Egypt, Chad and Libya. They all reported no problems with their routes, although the vehicles from Libya had to be cautious, as it is illegal to leave Libya that way. However the Sudanese side of the border proved unproblematic.
Relations between Ethiopia and Sudan are currently good.
Cheers,
Andy
