I am hearing more reports that there may be no need to avoid them – ie: unescorted travellers able to explore the south.
Either they are getting slack or the rule is being loosened on the quiet.
Both seem unlikely as little in it for DZ.

And regarding the TSH Algiers Lagos superhighway.
I just looked again at Bing and it appears there is tarmac going NW to < 100km of Assamaka.

I wonder how security might improve with the tarmac.
The robberies on that route was a major reason car dealers started preferring the longer route over Morocco coming from Europe.
Last time I was in Agadez 2014 I had three options to go north - wait perhaps a week for a convoy. Pay for an escort $$$.
Or, sneak out before daylight and take my chances (they suggested 50/50 chance of making it).

I suspect the bandits may have moved on to pastures new.
The bigger issue here has become trafficking migrants into Alg, even if there's now a berm along the border from Point Zero where migrants get dumped back pretty fast these days.

Update August: following the coup, Wagner may soon be invited in to sort things out - or capitalise on what they started

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
