Unleaded Fuel
Topic for both the sahara and sub-sahara forum: does anybody know about the availability of unleaded in Sahara (Morocco, Mauri), West-Africa (Senegal; Mali, Burkina Fasso, Togo, ...) and Central-west Africa (Cameroun, Gabon, Angola, ...)?
I have a BMW F650, standard fitted with a cat and looking at the possibilities to remove I get pretty cold sweated. Unless someone has better suggestion...?
Thanks,
Jef

Does anyone know is this is still the case?
I would prefer not to remove the CAT.

hello out there,
ronlon from australia says:
"There is no unleaded in southern Morocco"
that's not true. of course unleaded is readily available throughout the country, and in the desert too - in bigger towns like er rachidia, erfoud, tinerhir, zagora, agdz, ourzazate, taroudannt. if you take care and have enough capacity, you can get through the moroccan sahara with riding from one of these towns to another.
the last remaining difficult section is the road between zagora and tan tan via tata. there is no unleaded available until guelmim.
take care, this is a long way!
after tan tan, they should have unleaded in laayoune and dakla, but i don't know.
good luck to everyone

On your route eventually you will go out of unleaded range - leave the cat on and it will become ineffective making probs with your next emission test (but the bike will run OK on a dead cat) - or check out sparkur's link to take it off and save it for later

What about an after market exhaust? Would that not get around the cat problem?

I think that's what Sparkur means - isnt it?
Or "yes" (sensor weirdness notwithstanding)

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
