URGENT - UK carnet not valid in Egypt

Hi - hoping someone with more experience of carneys can advise me on how best to deal with this:

I seem to have a major problem at my first use of my UK carnet. I went through the procedure at Nuweibaa port (Sinai, Egypt£ and am now in Dahab, Egypt - another town. But the customs agent has now contacted me on facebook and is saying I have to return to him to correct the problem.

He says the carnet is not valid in Egypt since 1/1/2016 and this is because the UK club has not paid money that is due to the Egyptian club.

He says I need to make 'local papers' and this will cost me 2000 Egyptian Pounds, about £100 UKP

Obviously it would be a huge inconvenience to travel all the way back to Nuweibaa and the extra expense I cannot afford either.

Also, the only reason I bought the carnet in the first place is for Egypt as all the other countries, I am informed, can be dealt with using Temporary Import Permits.

He is demanding I do this today... (after no sleep for 36 hours - overnight ferry from Aqaba!)

I have contacted CARS in the UK and they have responded very quickly and they say they will contact the FIA and resolve it with Egypt - fingers crossed then!

Here is a transcript of the conversation (they use the word 'triptik' to mean carnet:

Hello. dear. lm Ahmed diab.nuweibia custom . There's a mistake in your paper's. you must return back to us to solve this problem. It will cause you a big problem. It's my mobile number. 01007997648

Hi Mido. I am in Dahab now. What is the problem exactly? Guy

Is it possible I can come back to Nuweibaa in 2 or 3 days? Or must I come immediately?

Your trip til papers from the UK club.and this club is invalid in Egypt. you must come to us to make .local papers.

triptik

It's a problem for me and you. I'm sorry . I don't know about this

I don't understand how this is possible - the triptik cost me a lot of money. And the only reason I have it is for Egypt. I am 100% sure it is valid for Egypt.

It's invalid from 1/1/2016

I can see (in your photo) it says valid until 31/10/2018 ...?

The local Egypt ion club stopped dealing with UK club .because the UK club don't pay money. For it.

The UK give you this .I don't know how

I will contact the UK club and see what they say

If I get local papers how much will that cost?

2000pound

I really can't afford so much money... First I will talk to the UK club as this would be their problem

The Egypt ion custom deal with the local club.the problem now with the Egypt ion club

okay. call your club.iwill wait you dear

You must come back to us.iwill wait you until 5pm

You may be right. In any case CARS called FIA who called Cairo who called the Customs guy and told him that the carnet association in the UK is kosher and that ended it - I'm amazed that the sustem actually worked in this case!

Sounds like a scam to me. Glad the system worked for you and they cleared it up without you having to pay!

So it is solved now?

If not, you are in the country, with your vehicle, and it is stamped in the Carnet, so I don't see a reason to go back.

If you look at the other Egypt Carnet topic (in this same subforum) you see that Egypt apparently has all kinds stuff going on with Carnets.

Seeing the mention of getting through Egyptian customs at Nuweiba reminds me of this - https://youtu.be/6tBAQyuHAvo
