The War, Visas for Chad in Niamey, and Stuff
Is it true that visas are no longer available for Chad from Niamey?
Now the shooting has started are there any borders in teh area including Sudan thart are any more difficult than usual?
Also - anybody have any idea where to get Cameroon visas along the Benin - Niger -Chad route?
Have a great war,
Peter

Not sure on the ongoing availability of visas in Niamey. However in light of the war, it may be worthwhile pointing out that Khartoum is not necassarily the best of locations to be at present. It has seen 2 days of intensive rioting by several hundred protesters with one being killed by the police yesterday. Whilst the Sudanese people are incredably hospitable and really friendly, it would be advisable to stay clear of Khartoum at present. This means it may be worthwhile getting your Ethiopian visa in advance before entering Sudan so that there is the option of going straight into Ethiopia without having to spend time in Khartoum. Hopefully, both the war and the hostilities will be over soon but in the mean time it doesn't look like a good place to be.

Chad visa was avazilable in Naimey without problems - it was issued teh same day and I think it was 13,000CFA, though I can't really remember
We are in Ndjemina, Chad, where we will get our visas for Cameroon (30,000CFA, either same or next day depending on how they feel)before heading South as soon as possible - Chad is not a place I would choose for a holiday - hot, dusty, bad roads, and surly locals...
Got around lake Chad after getting lost a few times - and lots of run-ins with corrupt officials and nasty locals - but no punctures until I got up this morning in the Novotel to find a flat tyre. The sand was a bugger and we did a fair amount of pushing and digging - ground clearance was difficult but we did a lot of off-piste to avoid ruts...
If anybody wants a fuller update on route conditions for the route around lake Chad let me know and I'll put something together

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
