Weather in Morocco in April
Hi,

I am just starting to plan my first overland trip to Morocco in April.

We are aiming to spend about 3.5 weeks in Morocco so hope to be able to get out into some of the desert as well as get up into the Atlas mountains.

So my question is, what sort of weather should be be expecting at that time of year?

Julian,

At midday expect 25-27 dec C in the north and 30 deg C and over in the far South /Western Sahara. You should be fine with 3 -4 litres of drinking water per day per adult.

What is it likely to be like in the evenings and also up in the Atlas mountains - I imagine quite a bit cooler?

You might run into snow on some of the mountain passes in April especially in the Atlas,and snowmelt floodwater could make some piste river crossings a bit tricky.They had a particularly bad year this last winter with quite a few roads and houses being completely washed away even as far south as Merzouga.The hotel "chez Francois" has been wrecked along with a few others nearby though the "Kasbah le Toureg" next door is intact(reccomended if you want to go and play in the dunes of Erg Chebbi).

We were in the south this year and the temperature got over the 40 degree mark in the shade. We had two adults and two children in the car and were topping 15 litres of water during the driving portion of the day (about 6-7 hours). Not that that matters of course as Morocco has plenty of water 'stops' as long as you plan your route properly.

April can be very hot in the south as others have hinted and last time I was there in April we were caught up in biblical locust and sand storms near Tata - very dramatic. During the same trip, we spent some time near Tafraoute in the Ameln (almond) valley and here it was much colder. Mornings typically hovering around the 0 mark but rising in sunshine to 15-18 c. The atlas will be much colder. Shouldn't have to worry unduly about water consumption.

So the bottom line is that we will need to take a broad range of clothes - I guess it's a bit like any holiday in the UK - be prepared for anything ;-))

Hi Julian,

I went to Morocco a few years ago in April. As the others have said, during the day at low altitudes, it should be quite warm/hot.

You may get caught out by rain storms though - so I'd recommend that you are prepared for this.

At higher altitudes (e.g. High Atlas areas), you may find that there is a lot of snow to contend with. I got stuck up between Midelt and Azrou for a few hours whilst the pass was closed due to snow. I managed to get thorough in the back of a van though (I was using my motorbike to tour Morocco).

Watch out for sand storms as well - they can appear quickly with little warning, although they are quite exciting to experience (maybe just the once though ;-))
