Were there any HUBBers ever kidnapped in Sahara?
Hey good people!
I think i saw once somewhere on this forum report from one of the HUBBers that was once took hostage in this sad Sahara- kidnapping story.
But i can't find it anymore searching, so please can somebody point me to that report or the person...
It would be interesting to read, if possible...
Thanks a lot!

Hi Davor, I think you may be referring to <Ulrich>, but he started contributing to the HUBB a while after his ordeal in 2003 (#1 on this list)and did not write about it here much.

Hi Davor-
if you looking for personal accounts, then some of those kidnapped in 2003 wrote quite extensively - there was at least one book though probably not translated from German. There was a series of articles in German tabloids too - but more snakes and scorpions kind of stuff.
There were also interviews (audio) online from the Austrian couple who were kidnapped in 2008. The Austrians included a lot of details (they managed to escape once) but the interviewer didn't know enough about the Sahara to ask sensible questions so much of the interview was dealing with daft things.
The Canadian diplomat kidnapped from outside Niamey also spoke extensively. I have heard several 40 minute interviews of him from different sources. They were good interviews and he was really analytical. I stand corrected, but I think he planned to publish something himself. If you look back far enough in the forum you may find links to the interviews.
Recently, those who have been freed have said very little - at least as far as I can tell. If true, it seems to point to the fact that intelligence on AQIM is being kept to the authorities.

Hey guys!
Thanx for the answers - Very helpful!
I can't find old links to the interviews on this forum, but i googled names you mentioned and found some interviews in mainstreem media. Though, it would be interesting to read some good analitical and truly personal report, not those usual boring massmedia approach...
(Unfortunately i only understand english, plus some french or spanish...)
Thanx again!
d.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
