where can I find gps waypoints of the last km before mauritania border?
did anybody took the train from Nouadhibou to Choum? How long is it to wait? Any difficulties with the vehicle transportation on the train?
How is the road between choum and atar? is gps needed? in this case where can I find gps waypoints of this route?

Hi – I would defiantly recommend the description above for getting to the Mauritanian border, although when we did this year we found its an easy days drive between Dakhla and Nouadibou. The only difficult bit is dealing with the boarder officials on the Mauritanian side... You won’t need GPS waypoints for this section as all routes seem to lead to more or less the same places.

We didn’t take the train to Choum but drove it both ways instead. You can do this in two days in a 4x4 without a GPS as you basically follow the railway line the whole way. Personally I wish I had ridden the track from Nouadibhou to Choum. the train journey was exhausting. but if you have a car then its better. on a bike I would have riden ON the railway lines (or between actually!)

The piste from Choum to Atar is very straightforward. You drive south 2-5km away from the cliff face, after 70km you will see a hard corrugated piste going towards the mountains, it is impossible to lose the way after this.

The train is starting to get a bit sporadic, it definitly leaves every Saturday but apart from this it all seems to be a bit hazy. Even the people who work in the station who used to be pretty exact about departures have no real idea.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
