Wheres Tom Sheppard's book?
Can anyone help? Tom Sheppards book "Vehicle Dependent Expedition Guide " is impossible to find. Its out of print, out of stock and you need an expedition guide just to find a copy.
Can anyone point me to where I can get a copy, new or second hand?
Ive tried all the usual big book stores and internet book shops.....
Thanks loads.

I have a copy I've hardly used. I'm also chasing a lead for some more copies. I'll let you know.

Try the Royal Geographic Society, I got two copies of it from them a couple of months ago - www.rgs.org.It isn't listed on their website any longer but perhaps you could give them a call.

Bought a couple of copies last year and the year before through the local landrover dealership. Might still be worth a try.

Sounds like an interesting book - is most of the info specific to 4WDs or also useful for bikes?
Cheers

It's very 4wd orientated - even the areas that cover general expeditioning assume a fair weight allowance. In fact, I reckon a 'fully prepared' Sheppard Land Rover would weigh about 5 tonnes!!

Its an excellent book, extremely comprehensive in all respects, dealing with clothing, foods, communications, stores, routeplanning/navigation etc. It falls down in two areas - though Tom Sheppard has travelled by motorbike in the Sahara a lot, he doesnt mention it as a means of transport in any great depth (its already a huge book and I guess he feels that bikes as self-supporting long range machines are limited). It also skips over medical care in the field, but K Melville's "Stay ALive in the Desert" is best for this anyway.
In terms of expedition planning books, it is the best in the field. It has big chunks of the author's 'Desert Expeditions' booklet that he wrote for the RGS some years ago, but thoroughly updated.
Hard to get hold of though - seen a few copies on Ebay, nothing recently.

Tom Sheppard himself was selling them the last time I bought one which was about 2 years ago. I did however see a Land rover dealer in Green Park(london) selling them anout a month ago. Give them a call.

Thanks alot.
I might have just found a copy....but it was an absolute nightmare to find. Ive emailed over 80 places, rung about 50 others and found possibly the last copy in the UK. Ive even had an email from Tom himself saying that hes no idea where to get it.
Ive one more lead too which might bring up a few copies, so if anyones interested, let me know and I can see if it comes to anything..

You can download the book from the link below:
OasisPhoto.com Reading Room
(Right mouse button > “save target as” to save on your computer instead of reading it online)
I have no idea if I’m infringing any copyrights here but I did downloaded from somewhere on the web and the process seemed legit. If you know otherwise let me know and I’ll take it off the site.
I concur, it’s a great book and a must read even though it’s outdated when it comes to electronic navigation equipment.

Oops… I guess I should have read the post more carefully . But as you said it’s still a great book.
Sam, do you have another pdf copy of your Source of Information for Overland Travelers? The one on my website gives error although still readable. Great info by the way. I’d be glad to put-up anything else you might have written.
