Trans America Trail - UK based - Questions

Hello everyone, need some advice.

Myself and a friend of mine are looking into doing the TAT. My rough plan at present is to fly April time to Virginia or close to, then do the TAT before heading south into Mexico.

Few things I need clarification on.

1. Buying a bike in Virginia - How? Do I need to register it to an address there? If so, how would I find an address to do this?

2. I don't require a Visa if under 90 days. It will be over 90 days, so would I just be better to cough up the 160 dollars and get a B2 Visa - and if anyone has done this, do you know the timescale involved?

I've read many topics on this, and am aware that I could just leave the country for a week and my 90 days will in effect be reset, however this opens up a can of worms with regards to bike storage etc.

Now, KLR or DR650?

You're in the Central America regional forum. I'd suggest posting in the North America forum. Cheers.

thread moved.

Oli Dear, re buying in Virginia - try contacting an HU Community there and see what they can do to help. The rules are different in every state! Also check the threads in this forum, it's been much discussed.

Just get the long visa, saves you a whole lot of hassle you just don't need on a vacation. Do it early!

Have a great trip, and let us know how you do - see Ride Tales Forum or start your own blog in HU Travel Stories

Thanks, I've just submitted a message to the community.

Visa in progress, just the rest to sort out, either shipping or buying over there - currently awaiting quotes back from shipping agents.

Date set for 01/06/18.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
