Tribute trip for Alistair
My boyfriend Dan and I are planning a trip for 4 months around the U.S and Canada in memory of our friend Alistair Farland. He was killed on his motorbike in North Carolina whilst on his adventure from Alaska to Argentina in 2014. Many of you may have met Al at Overland Expo or at a HU event and we are planning on attending both while we are there.
We are in the early planning stages at the moment and we would love some local help.
We are looking for a Camper or RV to travel in over the 4 months from August to December 2016.
We have looked at renting a RV from hire companies and for such a long period of time their quotes are way out of our budget.
What are my best options in regards to Aussies and insurance if we buy a cheap one? Or would it be best to be added as an additional driver to someone’s existing policy and pay the excess?
Should I look at buying one off Craigslist sight unseen or does anyone know of one for sale or alternatively does anyone want to ‘hire out’ their own camper for $$$?
We welcome any advice,
Cheers Jordan

Ping me off list (xs11pain@gmail.com), I met and was friends with Alistair, and have some RV/camper experience. I'll help you get sorted any way I can.
(I would just offer our RV, but we'll still be using it).

It's a lovely idea, and I wish you the best. If it were me, I think I would line up a few and buy when you get here. Maybe you could have someone help you sell it when you leave? I would be happy to help you in any way I can - I'm in Virginia (an hour from DC)...

Thanks McMolly, and xspain.
We are hoping to finish the trip in Colorado, would you know of anyone that could help us sell a camper from there or would you recommend driving it back to Cali because of the warmer weather?
Any advice on insurance would also be very helpful, I have a mate that said he was register and insure it for us but I want to know how you can register international drivers onto a policy, is it the same as bikes as I've seen a few posts about that.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
