US moto insurance, Mexican border?
Expect to cross from Mexico into the US next week sometime. Most probably Nuevo Laredo or Colombia. Does anyone know if I am able to purchase motorcycle insurance for the States on the US side of the border?
Thanks,
Hame

Hi guys!
I can't comment on the border insurance situation, but you may be able to sort out the insurance situation prior to that by contacting Progressive Insurance. They will insure a foreign registered bike in the US and they are very inexpensive. You may even be able to set something up online.
I would be surprised if you can get insurance at the border, but I could be wrong...

I live in San Diego and cross the US/Mexico border fairly frequently.
There are places on the US side to buy temporary insurance valid in Mexico. This phenomenon exists because many insurance companies specifically exclude coverage while in Mexico. (At least that's what I always thought - but will check).
But I have never seen places for visitors driving in to the US to buy US auto insurance.
Isn't your regular insurance still covering you while outside your home country? Mine does (except for the Mexico thing)

I don't know of any motorcycle insurance anywhere on the planet that covers you outside of your home country (except for the Green Card in Europe). Are you saying that your US motorcycle policy covers you outside the US? Maybe you are not thinking of motorcycle insurance...

You don't want to take the Colombia bridge it is just a big loop that takes you back onto I35. Take the Intl Bridge 2. Don't forget to check out of Mexico. The place to check out is a little difficult to find but is near bridge 2. You have to merge right just after a traffic light and then go down a hill towards the river.
I agree that progressive is the easiest way to go for insurance. Try to get it online. I paid about $100Dlls for the minimum coverage for a year. You won't be able to get insurance this side (Mexican side) of the border. The last time I went I got coverage online from a company called seguors gringos.com or something like that but think it is only for Mex vehicles.
If you are still around Mex City and want to drop by call me at 5005-2065 or 91186565

Davidmc - your USA issued insurance policy for your bike covers you for Canada too , same as Canadian policies cover us while in the USA. Has been that way for many many many .....years.
Europe has the green card, N America has a pink slip.

Yes, I forgot about Canada & the US, you are correct. I guess the point I was trying to make is that if you are going on a multi-country trip, its most likely that your "home country" insurance will not cover you. Even in Europe there are often exclusions on the green card, primarily in the east.
