Keep in mind the time of year due to the weather you can encounter further north.

There's plenty of camping sites, and places you can sneak off the road to camp without paying a fee. Some cities have hostels.

couchsurfing.com is a good spot for finding places where you can meet locals and stay at their place.

I'm in Sacramento, California and you can stay at my place. Only, no one goes through Sacramento because there's tons of good roads that go around it.

edited to add that at couchsurfing, I'm at:

Lots of good camping here in the USA. There are basickly three federal agencies that have land here and all allow camping in one aspect or another. Add to that each state has campgrounds with various ruls and even county parks. For the federal agencies US foreast service and BLM allow FREE camping on most areas that are not developed camp sights is pick a spot and camp. Some area are off limits for camping but usually marked. In norther california alone there are several hundred square miles of forest service and BLM lands. There is also the national park service and they are a little more picky where you camp, but still allow camping for free or low cost. follow links below. These links show locations and rules of the park. The biggest thing is camp fires. If they are not allowed then do not start one since the dangers of forest fires is very high and firefighters die every year fighting them. If you accidently start a forest fire with an ILLEGAL camp fire then your stay in the US amy be longer than you wanted.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
