XR400 impossible to insure
Having posted here before and got sensible answers I am doing so again in desperation.
I have contacted many many insurance companies regarding insurance for a six week trip to the states, most recommended by poeple on this site or by adverts I have seen on other boards. All seemed fine and I was told by many companies to contact them nearer to the departure date to arrange final details, with one month to go I began calling.
I am now a week from departure and not one company will insure an XR400 because it is classed as an off-road bike (I say nothing when I ring except the make and model). I have a full road legal kit fitted that ensures total compliance with all us states' requirements but this seems to hold no sway.
Obviously having read the last post I am considering a cancellation rather than risk problems as described.
Cash is really no longer an issue, I'll sell my kidneys if I have to!! ;-)
Any ideas?
Hopefully......
Dave

I'll assume you've tried motorcycle express and talked to Gail? Tell her I sent you.
Try Progressive insurance. http://www.progressiveinsurance.com
They require a US address, but I suspect there is someone on the HUBB that can help with that. Check and see if they can do it first, then worry about the address.
Any volunteers for a temporary US address?

Grant,
As it happens I tried Progressive last night and after some white lies (KISS)I managed to get a figure of only $115 out of them.
I now have a quote number which is ready to activate on production of a US registered credit card. Why I cant use any of the four VISA cards I own I have no idea.
If anyone would be willing to help me with two such insurance costs I would be eternally grateful and would of course transfer the funds directly to your account.
Many Thanks
Dave

Hmmmm......many thanks for the suggestions, finally after some serious begging I have a policy which, with the support of a US credit card holder and addressee is legal.
Many thanks to all of you who mailed me, its great to know that people will offer support to someone just because of this site,
Thanks for the time and effort Grant,
Dave

Yep,
It took a little time and a few minor white lies, but the insurance is definately valid and I'm off to the states on Sat to see
5000 miles of the trans am trail!!
I'll see you all next year with a few pictures at the horizons uk meet.
You'll have the dubious pleasure of seeing me this yesr on a series of slides shown by Jasper Ditton about a quick trip we did to morrocco over christmas.
Hope all goes well at the meeting,
Dave

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
