Smile Container Sharing Seattle to Vladivostok June 2017
Hello,

Currently looking for options to get our 3 bikes from the West Coast into Vladivostok. I got a quote from FESCO shipping for $3,100 for my own 20 ft container. This means we have some room for some more bikes or even a car.

If anyone is interested, please let me know. We plan to have the bikes shipped in early/mid June so that we can begin our route by the beginning of July.

There is a flight option. I'll send details later. But you will need to go via Seoul. And then ferry. Vlad cannot take the cargo planes needed for bikes (apparently)

Options, as I see it.

1) Fly the bikes to South Korea, either ride or truck the bikes across to Dognhae and Ferry to Vladivostok ( I assume the ferry is still operational)

For this option, contact LEI in Vancouver.
Marshalla.Hung@lei.ca
She will direct you where to get the bike crated. Probably Pacific Motorsports.

And Wendy Choi to sort out the SK side of things

2) Use the Ro-Ro from Seattle, if it turns up/fits with your plans. :-)

Fesco *used* to do a Ro-Ro from Seattle to Vlad, this may or may not still be running.

This was operated by Green Line trade, GreenLine Global - Ocean Freight, my contact was

irina@greenlinetrade.com

But if you have a look at the blog, this did not pan out.

Given the choice, I would do the air freight vie Seoul again (with the correct paper work :-) ).

Cost wise, it was cheaper and faster than using a container. (Even with the added truck).

Hey BruceP - Thanks for all of that info!

I've looked at a couple of different options, including air freight directly into Vlad. That quote was over $16,000. So that was a hard pass haha.

FESCO quoted me Seatle to Vlad via ocean freight at about $3,100 for an entire 20ft container (more than I need for the 3 bikes).

I looked into the Korea ferry option, but it seemed like people were paying about $250 for their personal ticket, plus another $500 to transport the motos. So that's $700 per person just get from Korea to Vlad, not including actually getting to Korea. If I can get the 3 Bikes to Korea for $1000 (which seems like it would be too good to be true), then I'm still paying the same amount of money ($700 X 3 for the ferry + $1000 to get to Korea) as I am for the direct Seatle to Vlad container.

That being said, maybe my costs for the Korea leg are all wrong.

I'll reach out to that Green Line Trade company about the RoRo. I didn't see anything about that on the FESCO site.

Read your post about your time there -- I hear you loud and clear about patience running out in some of these places, but seems like you've been having quite the adventure!

If you think to ride throug Russia think about renting bikes in Vladivostok.

Next year we are going from Moscow to Vladivostok in the end of May. In the end of June bikes will be in Vlad ready to go back to Moscow.

Can be cheaper option than to ship your bike. But it depends on your plan, this is just an idea...))

Vlad cannot take the wide body aircraft, hence the prices.

Unfortunately the price you pay, is what they ask. I'd say go for the LEI to Korea option, as that way you get an extra county. Sea freight is unpredictable for arrival times.

The cost is just part of the trip.

Yeah I did a lot more research and discussed it with my brother and cousin. Pros of going in through S. Korea outweigh the cons ($$).

I've been trying to get in touch with Wendy Choi, but I haven't been having luck. We sent a few emails back and forth, but she kind of disappeared from communication in early May.

Do you know if I need to use Wendy? Or any fixer in S. Korea for that matter? My shipping company is telling me that a Korean tax payer must be the designated importer of the shipment, but I find that hard to believe. Haven't lots of people done all of the paperwork themselves?

Anyways, time is a'ticking haha.

Ask your shipper for a contact? We used Wendy and she did go quiet for a while as well. But not for long.

Wendy uses another company for land shipping (when you cock up the paper work on the USA side) , unfortunately I am on the road and don't have that card with me :-(.

That is a great price if you can get at least 3 more bikes. If I was ready financially, I would join on that one, for $500 abike it would be a no brainer

Wendy is back in contact, so things are starting to move forward again.

Turns out that one of the biggest cost adders to my initial quotes was the transportation of the motorcycles from Ohio to the West Coast for shipping. So we decided to take a longer route (43 days vs 23) and transport the bikes from Ohio (home) to New York for a cargo ship that will go the long way to South Korea. Only $2,100 bucks, door to port service. Not bad split 3 ways.

Anyways, bikes get loaded here in Ohio on May 30th. We have a little bit of time for last minute tune ups and and to pack up the panniers. Then it's off to ride around the world. Should be fun.

Hey Grahams - We are planning to travel from Korea to Vlad by mid/late July. Well that's the plan now anyways.

I'm still trying to figure out what documents I'll need to get my bike out of the US considering I have a loan on it.

But I'll keep you posted. We might end up having to push it back.
