crossing Russia / Georgia IS possible!!
Hello everybody,
I met a russian guy on the Georgian Military HIghway going from Tiflisi to Vladikafkas.
He told me that he met 3 travellers (non-russians) crossed there.
He crossed himself and asked for border crossing when non-russian. He was told crossing from Georgia to Russia IS possible.
I am not sure about the other directions though, but it is worth checking.

Hi,
It is Abkhasia under Russian management and separated from Georgia. Local Abkhazians who live in Abkhazia or someone who has close relatives are allowed to pass to Abkhazi by Georgian and Abkhazian (Russian) authorities. Some Russians may allowed to Georgia or to Abkhazia (possible).
If we are talking for a foreigner like you and me ! FORGET IT...
I hope it is clear...

sorry no information about the borders.
I tried to make a telephone call to Georgia-Russia border at Georgia side.
2 different friends tried to find out if it is open or not. And they can't find the correct answer.
I think it is closed...

To try to get to the bottom of this I rang the British Embassy in Georgia { Tbilisi + 995 32 2274747 }
The Lady was very helpful .
She told me that anyone with a Valid UK passport wanting to enter Georgia from Turkey is permitted to enter Georgia , But you can NOT leave Georgia via the Georgian Russian boarder. This is closed.
Hope this is of Help.
we now need to re plan our route into Russia

Crossing from Georgia to Russia via Kazbegi/Vladikavkaz border point May 2012:
Went Friday 11 May 2012 up from Tbilisi to Kazbegi via Georgian Military Highway. The road is very nice, except for the crossing over the pass, where you have 14 km of really bad road. The rest is brand new and fun to ride.
Went up to the border point, parked the bike and asked the guy from custom if I can cross as a non russian/georgian/CIS citizen the border. The answer was YES YOU CAN!
I asked then again, and mentioned that last year the border was closed for foreigners. They said yes, it was closed but now it's open, it is ok to cross to Russia. If you have a russian visa, of course.
I did not crossed because I wanted to go to Azerbaijan and from there to Turmenistan on the way to Mongolia and Siberia.
