Entering Kazkahstan from China at KHORGOS
Hi all
We are driving a Thai tuk tuk ( www.tuktotheroad.com) - a three wheeler, from Thailand to the UK. We are in China at the moment and due to enter khazakhstan on about the 11 July at Khorgos near Almaty. We have all the vehicle reg documents, in English, IDP's, Kazakh visas. No carnet as we don't need one and no letter of invitation as you don't need one for single entry. As far as we know this is all we need to get into Kaz.
BUT we have heard a horror story recently of a swedish guy who had all correct documents who got fined $500 at this border and his bike confiscated for weeks.
Does anyone know about this crossing and have any advice? And do we have all the correct documentation? And can we buy insurance at the border?
Any help much appreciated.
THANK YOU
Ants

STANtours
Hi,
I´m Serge from Belgium. I crossed this border last April on my bicycle and had not any problems.
You can try to contact David from STANtours, he´s a German and runs an agency in Almaty. He knows what he is doing, so I guess he´ll be the right person to ask for info on that matter.
E-mail: info@stantours.com
You can also try to contact the Caravan Cafe in Kashgar. Two Americans Greg and Scott can give you info on the Chinese side of the border.
E-mail: info@caravancafe.com
But DON`T ask any info form the CYTS, CITS or CTS they are just money makers instead of tourist services. They told me I needed a bicycle permit to cycle in China, for 50$ they good give me one. Of course I did not need any permit to cycle in China.
good luck and take care
Serge

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
