Insurance for Russia
Hi all, we've been doing a lot of research for our RTW which is getting closer to our leave date of the 2nd March 2019, we have changed our route a lot due to the issues with insuring our bikes in the U.S. so we are now heading down the Spain into Morocco and meandering our way up through Greece and Croatia and eventually to Estonia and into Russia around the end of May as we are heading to the Nordkapp for end of June. can anyone point us in the right direction for information on insuring our bikes for Russia? we have been all over the internet and it seems that this can be purchased before the border at petrol stations? anyone had any experience of this? thanks in advance.

Your options are:
- Find a European Green Card policy which covers Russia (good luck if you're UK based);
- Buy before the border, sometimes an option though you're likely to over-pay;
-Buy at the border; works fine at major borders, others may have no insurance agent, or one that keeps shorter hours than the border. In this case, go to the first city, look for an insurance agent (they are everywhere) and buy there.
I have made many trips to Russia by car and always bought at the border or somewhere after, or not bothered at all (though these days bit seems to be checked more often).

It's no big deal at all. Yes, they do sell it at borders , however I remember that noone had bike specific policies there when I crossed into Kaliningrad last month. I just rode into the city and headed to the nearest office of "Alfa-Strakhovanya", ( www.alfastrah.ru) where a whole month cost a little over ten euros.
They sell online too , it's really quite simple.

We were unable to get insurance at the border when we crossed from Ukraine into Russia. Told to get it in the first town. We were unable to find an agent that could sell it to us. Something about not being able to enter our non Russian driver license into the computer. Spent half the day going to every insurance agent in town. Finally said **** it and rode on. Tried several times to get insurance in different towns we went through.
Got stopped once by police and eventually waived on even though we didn't have the insurance papers. In Volgograd a local took us to the main office of a couple different companies. While the staff was extremely helpful and tried several times to get us insurance in the end we proceed with out it.
Crossing out of Kazakhstan and back into Russia we were able to buy it with no problem. Less than $20 for 3 months.
So after all the above, I'd recommend you buy it at the border. Apparently there was an issue with foreign motorcycles getting insurance even though EU green card providers this summer. Heard this from both Stefan Knopf and Dooby at Lobagala. But seems like it is getting sorted out.
