Another route !

Hallo guys,
I finished my ride around the world this summer, (Round The World - sverrirt.blog.is) and because of the shipping problem from Magadan, I changed route and went to Vladivostok, and took a ferry from there to Japan. I then airfreighted the bike from Tokyo to Anchorage in Alaska. I then took the scheduled flight to Achorage via Seattle.

how easy was it to alight at Japan then get the bike air frieghted - did you have to get a carnet?

What were the costs involved?

Thanks

Dear old punk,

W140? Do it in style!
It has always been my wish to travel around the world in a Mercedes but my choice would be a W124 Estate or W202 Saloon.
The W140, being rear wheel drive only, will struggle to get from Skovorodino to Magadan via Yakutsk. There are rivers to cross and alot of muddy roads which are not ideal W140 territory. The rivers only get low enough to cross in trucks in late summer early winter at the end of August. Believe me when I say Magadan is out (you'd need to cross some rivers on the back of a lorry because some bridges are broken). Next, from Khabarovsk to Vanino, the road is unpaved and can get extremely difficult (from what I have read) to pass. The fastest route is to head to Vladivostock - in fact stick to the Federal Road throughout Chitinskaya and Amurskaya oblast - the new one they are building. 700kms from Khabarovsk in ONE day. From Vladivostock you can get a ferry to Japan and then ship from Japan to Anchorage. If you are feeling rich, you might even be able to airfreight the car as anchorage is a major freight hub between NA and Asia. That would be my preferred solution. The Americans might also want your car cleaned really well before they let it into America - all those creepy crawlies hidng in nooks and crevices. Consult with the Yanks.
That's enough to start. Feel free to ask more questions. I did quite alot of research and the only sticky bit I didn't yet figure out was the Japan Alaska link. New York to Southampton in a cruise liner - must be space for a car there. The old QE2 had a garage in it and those ships always say no baggage limit!
Keep us informed.
Les

Big fat ugly Merc

Yo Lez,

I'm not minted just a mad for it joiner. Gotta move quick to hit the weather window through Russia and Alaska hope to leave end of April latest or it will be 2009. Got a camera man and Russian speakin student on board. Donated car and prepared it myself as run is for charity. Sheffield to Sheffield Alabama or bust. Air freight out of Japan @$9000 so relyin on sponcer's, Thats the snag at mo but will fund it myself if all fails.

Sellin my old sKateboard collection to fund it fuel bill @£4500. gotta grow up some time.

Later Dude,

Richard

Smile Fliying from Magadan To Anchorage

Hello all! I have posted this info in another topic related but someone deleted all topic. LOL
Ok, let me send the info again. The best option to get one way flights from Magadan(Russia) to Anchorage(Alaska) is by taking the flights below (the info was obtained from the own sites of flight companies):
Magadan to Vladivostok: Vladivostok Air (Avia): 320 USD
Vladivostok to Seoul(Korea): Korean Airlines: 470 USD
Seoul(Korea) to Anchorage: China Airlines (change plane in Taipei): 785 USD.
The total of flight will cost you: 1565 USD.
These flights already includes taxes and are for a one way ticket, per person.
If you need more information and details please check out the site of flight companies. Note: Vladivostok Air is already including Anchorage on its routes but they don´t operate yet. See it in its site. Let´s see if they can operate this route from Vladivostok to Anchorage in 2010.
Have a nice trip.

Yes, we are all waiting for Max to tell us the reason he is posting information on how to take an international passenger flight! :confused1:
Do tell us how to get to Magadan by air with a motorcycle for $1500.
This is something veteran motorcycle travelers have not managed to accomplish even domestically from within Russia. Did you do it? We are eagerly awaiting your inside information...

Also, Vlad a day and a half drive almost completely on paved road from Khabarovsk, so it is most likely a shorter drive than to Vanino.
From Vladivostok, you can also get to Japan or Korea (if you have a carnet) where you are sure to find cargo transport to the USA.

From Vanino, you can also go to Sakhalin island and then on to Japan. But Vlad gives you much more options (even if you have to face more bureaucracy)

The unfortunate fact with international freight is that the closest location is not always the easiest to get to. There is not a whole lot of trade between Alaska and Far East Russia, so there are fewer options as for transport.

But if you have the time and will, definately try Vanino and let the rest of us know what you encountered! I don't mean to put you off, I just was letting you know what is possibly (in my opinon) a more feasable route.
After all, its YOUR adventure
Chris wrote all right.
now , from magadan, Yakutsk ets. to USA you can fly only thru Vladivostok or Khabarovsk , then Seoul, Niigata (JP) or Beijing. a ten years ago Aerjflot flights from vladivostok to Magadan and then to Ancorige directly. i heared it's may be back next summer.
I guess, today vladivostok is most usefull place for start from Russia to east.
Wiil be glad to help you here...
