Riding solo in Mongolia
There are spoked wheels for the Vstrom, about $2500 euro from memory, they look the ducks nuts. Check out VSRI I think, or maybe Vstrom UK. If I can find the link I will post it
I rode the southern route last September with stock rims no problems at all. The only potholes where I dented them were in Russia and Kaz so there is no real need for spoked rims. They would be nice though.
The southern road is being built and paved. You may be surprised how much road there is as compared to tracks when you get there
I did have one river crossing, it was swift and about 500mm deep. I rode it with two minders one on each pannier because the current tried to push my bike downstream. Only $10 each as compared to a truck, $60
I reckon you need to go play on the dirt with all your gear, just so you feel more confident, but I reckon if I can do it, anyone can
The southern route as mentioned also has more traffic so I had no problems getting help when I needed it, twice.
Once to reeled my pannier and once they game me food and lodging as mine had gone missing
