russia insurance problems/info
Hi
Just a quick one to let everyone know that if you are coming into russia / ullan ude from mongolia / ulaan battar there is nobody there to buy green card insurance from as we found out about 4 days ago. we had to drive to irkustk and buy it there. we were luck that is has been raining so much and we didnt get stopped by the anp traffic police!!!!!
we had previously bought the insurance at the boarder but not at this one. on the plus side you will not get asked for it as you enter russia at customs.
hope this helps
cheers adam

This is not true, you can buy insurance green cards for Russia at the Altenburg border post , it just isn't obvious where you can get it. I had a look yesterday and got some.
As you approach the small town you will go into this small gated area just before the actual border this mini clearance zone is where all the money changers and such like hang about. There is a small hut on the right where a man will sell you Russia (and Mongolian if you want it) insurance green cards for 1300 roubles (26 quid) a month not exactly as cheap as other borders but he is the only seller there.
But it is possible, what is bad though is his opening hours the border closes at 6pm and he closes at 4pm.

Wish I'd read this sooner! Am now in UU. Didn't spot any chance to buy insurance at the border, so need to find some now. Don't have tie to go to Irkutsk. Does anyone know anywhere in UU to get insurance?
Any info greatly appreciated!
Cheers.

Ask a taxi driver...you'll find plenty next to Lenin's giant head. If there is a young driver named Sasha there greet him for me!

Ulan Ude Insurance
OK, if anyone else needs to do this then here's one option I found with the help of the stunning Maria at the Baikal Plaza Hotel.
With Lenin's head to your left and Baikal Plaza hotel to your right, go up the hill to the big crossroads with the flyover and railway line. Immediately before the flyover turn right, go about 1km and on your right there is a big multi-storey building with an electronics shop on the ground floor.
It is 7a Borsoeva (bopcoeBa) street.
On the 4th floor, office 409, is Ingosstrakh (something like NHrocctpax in cyrillic) insurance, who can issue a green card. At 2000 rubles for 30 days it's not all that cheap but it's probably cheaper than paying off a traffic cop.
Their phone number is 213801 but they don't speak english.
Hope that helps someone!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
