Russia to KZ : Yustik to Ridder border ?

Hello
We are travelling from Ulaanbaatar to Bishkek on a Royal Enfield,
We started four days ago and reached Khovd today. From Bayankhongor to Khovd, the asphalt is brand new except for a 130km stretch between Bayankhongor and Altaï where the road is still under construction.
We are planning to cross Tashanta border in 3 days and then cross to Kazakhstan through ... which border ?
Is the one connecting Yustik (RU) to Ridder (KZ) on a dirt road (A-9 on glen map) open to foreigners or do we have to ride all the way to Shemonaikha border?
Thanks a lot for your advices and tips !!!

No the border between Ust Kan and Ridder is not open to foreigners. Ust Kan is also right on the edge of a border zone, which are forbidden for foreigners unless immediately entering or leaving the country.

The first border on your path open to foreigners is the one between Zmeinogorsk and Shemonaikha.

A recommended and scenic path to get there would include going thru Ongudai on the main M52 highway, then 25 km further on down the road, turn west to Ust Kan, then north to Soloneshnoye, then west to Kurya, then south to the border

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
