Winter crossing of Russia - Trip Report

Back in late November 2010 I escaped the Mongolian winter and drove right across Russia, to the Estonian border. You can read about it here:

Stage 24 – Russia: Siberia To Saint Petersburg | EurasiaOverland

I descended the Chuya Highway out of the Altai Republic at night, arriving in Biysk and making further stops in Akademgorodok (Novosibirsk) and Omsk.

Frozen Irtysh River in Omsk:

Early winter in Siberia is a time of wild swings in temperature. When in Omsk the temperature swung from -25ºC to about 0 in a day, making for treacherous road conditions, especially with my summer tyres

Stopping in Ufa and Chelyabinsk, I arrive in Samara, which I think is one of Russia' most charming cities on the still unfrozen Volga.

Sunset behind Novokuybyshevsk:

Then into the historical heart of Russia; Nizhny Novgorod, Vladimir, Suzdal, Sergiev Posad, Tver and Novgorod.

St Demetrius Cathedral in Vladimir:

Then finishing in Saint Petersburg, where the truck broke down for the first time in 120,000 km (first and last time.. to date). A beautiful city but bone-breakingly cold.

The bitterly cold Neva waterfront:

A journey through Russian history!

Thanks for looking

EO

Thanks very much James, I'm very happy that you read it. Feels great to get these articles written up after several years... just another 15 stages to go now

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
