Yakustsk, Magadan and alternative routes trough Siberia
Hi,
Currently in Japan. Planning our trip trough Siberia. As we are not in a hurry, we are looking at venturing a bit deeper into Siberia. We will arrive in Russia in either Vladivostok or Kholmsk (via Sakhalin), not sure yet. Head for Khabarovsk and from then on we don't really know yet.
Eventually we have to get to Irkutsk for our Mongolian visa. But we would love to go to Yakutsk as well. We are hoping to find some up-to-date information on that region:
- What are the conditions of the road between Never (where the road splits north on my map) and Yakutsk?
- What are the conditions of the road between Yakutsk and Magadan? This road has become infamous by now, and we want to go and have a look where its status comes from ;-)
- Is there another way to get to lake Baikal from Yakutsk besides backtracking?
We are travelling in a 4wd (Landcruiser) and timing would be mid-june to mid-juli.
Thank again to the best overlanding community on the web!
Cheers,
Frederik & Josephine

Looks like nobody goes that way? Or maybe maybe nobody survived? ;-)

Salut,
Have a look at this: Terracirca these two people have travelled the way you want 2 years ago now but the pics in the Yakutsk-Magadan section give good idea of what to expect. everything is in german though, so if only pictures are of interst to you, you have to cllck on "reiseberichte" tab, then go in the different parts (Teil 5 is the one you want) in the left hand menu, then click on the "zur Galerie" link.
Hope this helps!! If you go this route, I'll be mostly happy to hear from you, I'm planning this as well, but in a good old 2cv... by the way, 2cvfred, is there a link?
In any case, my email is sebno2[banane]gmail.com, replacing the [banane] with an @...
En français, plutôt, si jamais! Cheers, Seb

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
