Expedition Equipment
Hi guys,
Just joined the forum - what an amazing wealth of information!
Myself and a friend are soon to embark on an attempt to reach Die Hel, near Cape Town via the African east coast, before returning home via the West. We are funding it ourselves and it's all in aid of charity so please do visit our website ToHelAndBack - Home.
Apologies i am getting off topic. We are currently preparing our 1997 Defender 110, 300TDi for this 11month trip. If you have any equipment for sale such as roofrack, rooftent, winch, fridge, stacking system, spare wheels/tyres or other bits/spares which would fit our vehicle please do get in touch as we are on the lookout. Even tools such as high lift jack please still get in touch - we are starting from scratch so need pretty much everything. We are based in Buckinghamshire.
thanks very much
Carl and Tom

"Late in September 2009 Tom Picton and Carl James will drive from Buckinghamshire, England, to Die Hel near Cape Town in South Africa, then attempt to drive back home."
Guys, that isn't a lot of time to prepare a vehicle properly if your starting from scratch now, even if you have the next two months to do it fulltime, especially as many people are on holiday for a few weeks here and there at the moment etc.
My advice would be to spend your money on the mechanical side of things as the first priority, as these problems are the least fun to suffer along the way: Start with things like a new clutch, new timing belt, replace all rubber bushes/hoses/rubber everything etc etc
Good luck, your going to be busy, but the impression from your website and posting is that you need 3 times as much time to prepare (assuming you are doing so from scratch) else your first 6 months of the trip could be a comedy of errors that could have been prevented with good preparation.
I'm not trying to be nasty or damper your enthusiasm, but I have seen a few similar sites and projects over the years and they all seem to suffer from a lack of good preparation - the trip becomes an endurance of easily avoidable hassle imho.
I hope you have already proved me wrong and have a safe and happy trip though!

Hi Roamingyak,
Thanks for your thoughts, don't worry we aren't starting entirely from scratch now, the car has been in a sponsors garage fulltime for the last few weeks now so the mechanical side of things is almost complete. Now we are just trying to get the expedition specific equipment. Had a look at the desert pistes dvd, looks great!

Thanks for those of you who have already contacted us with bits of kit you have available. Anyone else got bits and pieces they are looking to sell?

Hi there.
If you are interested, i have a couple of lockable gerry can holders for sale. If you need i can include the cans too? They are black painted steel, special padlocks included with the keys. And are drilled to fit laying down or standing up. Also a high lift jack and mounts, for a roof rack too!
You can pm me, and i will send some pics. We can work out the price to suit.
Regards,
Nick.
