Landrover Defender 90 2012. Overland special. Suffolk, England

Landrover Defender 90. 2012 XS Puma 2.2 overland special. Move to North America forces sale.
£37,000.
42,500 miles
12 Moths MOT.
Suffolk, England.

One owner, very low miles, overland special. I bought the 90 XS new from Southampton LR in 2012. It came with the usual XS extras, ABS, immobiliser, heated seats, heated front screen, electric windows, A/C and traction control 6 speed gearbox etc. Waxoyled from new, ZERO rust. All doors, bulkhead and under capping’s are rust proofed with cavity wax every summer and ACF50 is used on everything!

Since owning the Landrover it has developed, over time and with experience into an extremely capable and comfortable overland vehicle, evolving into one of the most comprehensive 90s available. Not just a Roof Top tent and sliding rear drawer then classing it as an Overlander! This defender is a true one off build, the specification is extensive, fully proven and it is ready to go anywhere right now.
I never dreamt of selling the vehicle so spared no time or money on its evolution. The wife and I plus our dog have travelled comprehensively around Europe and North Africa, without issue of either comfort, reliability or want.

But I have been given a fantastic opportunity to work in North America and a Defender model of this age isn’t allowed into the US. With huge deliberation during the past few months we have decided to sell our pride and joy. Where do I start?.......

At the forefront of my mind before any modifications was: it has to be efficient and intuitive to use and it must look ‘right’. Only the best quality components from recognised manufacturers have been used. By using available space wisely and solar, the 90 is capable of 4-5 days of full autonomy before a resupply is needed. I do not have any pictures of the build/development of the vehicle, never expecting to sell it I didn’t think there was need! The accompanying pictures show the vehicle being used for real.

If you aren’t familiar with Landrover Defender esp Pumas some of the following will make little sense! Either give me a call or have a look online, defender2.net is a great forum where I gained lots of my ideas.

Engine. Puma 2.2 tdci. LR service history while under warranty, by me since. LR recall to replace oil pump completed in 2015. Oils changed every 6k miles, receipts of all oils etc. Improvements: Alisport intercooler and silicone hoses. BAS Auto 170bhp remap inc BAS RRC Remote Remap and Diagnostic tool. Full stainless exhaust. RAI to airbox hose improved to 80mm silicone piping and 100% water tight. Magnetic sump plug. 240 volt engine pre-warmer. PRO-VENT 200 oil catch tank.

Transmission[/U][/B]. 6 speed. New AP clutch in July 2017 (LR clutch had a known issue). Ashcroft Transmission improved MT82 output shaft. Syncho-gearboxes slick shift. Selector housing bushes as per LR recall. Ashcroft HD drive flanges on both axles. These improvements have transformed the drive, with near zero gearbox slack and a smooth precise gear change. Magnetic gearbox, transfer box, front and rear diff filler and drain plugs.

Suspension. Old Man Emu +2 springs, standard duty front extra heavy rear. +2 OME Nitrocharger shock absorbers. Tubular front turrets. Cranked rear trailing arms. Extended Goodridge stainless brake hoses. Cor4 front and rear diff guards. Lowered anti roll bar mounting to compensate for the lift. SUMOBAR HD steering bar and drag link including greaseable HD track rod ends. Gwyn Lewis HD wide angle greaseable and adjustable A frame ball joint. Devon4x4 double Cardan front prop shaft. OME steering damper. ALL breathers extended to the RAI. ALL rubber bushes replaced in July 2017 with Genuine LR items. 30mm hub-centric wheel spacers.

Wheels and Tyres. Genuine LR 16inch Boost Alloys, all in good condition with no corrosion. Tyres, BF Goodridge MUD Terrain KM2s 285/75, they make the vehicle very capable in all conditions. 80% tread remaining. To balance the wheels, often a problem with tyres this size Magnum Plus tyre balancing beads are used, small silicone beads inside the tyre, used on HGVs. There is no wheel shake/vibration at all, plus if the tyre loses a chuck of rubber off road they do not need re balancing as the beads are dynamic.

Electrics. Twin optima batteries under passengers’ seat mounted to a Deven4x4 twin battery tray: one Red top (vehicle Bat), one Yellow Top (Leisure Bat). National Luna intelligent split charge system with LED status panel mounted on Cubby box. 240 volt hook up to CTEK battery charger with selectable vehicle or leisure battery charging. Victron energy solar control to charge leisure battery via a flexible 120watt solar panel stored under the roof top tent. All additional electrics are fused or use a circuit breaker. 1000watt 240-volt inverter mounted under cubby box supplying to two 3 pin sockets by rear door. Anderson plug, and HD jump leads in passenger foot well. USB/12volt sockets in cubby box and internally and externally by rear door. All additional lighting/power is taken from the leisure battery only. Independent, lockable isolation switches for vehicle and Leisure batteries.

Interior. The entire interior trim has been removed including both head linings and extensively sound proofed with dynamatting, in places double layered! Leather additions to the dash include Grab handle, glove box and instrument cluster. 3x RAM mounts on dash to mount Tablet/GPS/Phone. Colour rear view camera built into sun-visor. MOMO steering wheel. Mud-Stuff Arms rests for both seats. Ignition key/central locking key fob combined like a ‘normal car’ (All original keys and fobs included) Puma glove box. Mobile centres puma cruise control. Heated XS seats. XS Cubby box with auto LED lighting and Mud-stuff tray. Seat risers. Addition sound proofing under the standard XS black carpet in a genuine LR rubber flooring. Security floor safe under passenger’s feet. Additional safe under cubby box. Flexible LED map light. Mud-suff heater defector. Eberspacher diesel heater with 7-day timer control providing warm air to the tent and cab, details in the overland section. Both rear seats have been removed, details in the overland section. Rear door soft open gas strut. Rear door inside panel redesigned to allow for a folding down aluminium table and storage of essentials. New ARDCASE and ARDSAFE pedal security system.

Exterior. All bolts replaced with stainless steel items. 5mm tapered Front bumper from Extreme 4x4 with two swivelling recover points. Cor4 Ali steering guard. Cor4 head light guards (modified to allow clearing of the head lights). Stainless steel head light surrounds. 28inch LED light bar recessed in front grill. LED side, tail, brake and indicators. Black checker plate on wing tops and bonnet. Heated front mirrors. GMB fender locker housing compressor switch/coupling/gauge, 240volt hook up, engine pre-warm switch, solar hook up and CTEK battery charge selector switch. (Carling switch gear) Mantec RAI fully sealed to airbox. Aluminium sun visor. Climair wind deflectors on both front windows. Twin screen washer jets utilising left hand drive wiper mount holes. HD Tree sliders. Front-Runner gull-wing windows allowing easy access to the rear/kit. Genuine LR NAS rear step, Mantec spare wheel carrier enhanced to open independently from the rear door assisted by gas strut. Fire extinguisher mounted discreetly to spare wheel carrier. 8inch LED light bar above rear door. Trasharoo bin bag on spare wheel. Entreq stainless steel mud flap brackets all round. Two large, quick and easily deployable aluminium tables that mount to the side of the vehicle for additional work top space. Front-Runner slim line roof rack. Front-Runner 40litre water tank. Single Front-Runner jerry can mount on roof rack, inc fuel Jerry can. 50inch LED light bar mounted to front underside of roof rack.

Rear/buck area. All carpets removed and extensively sound proofed. Additional carpeting to all bear metal areas where LR didn’t bother! Original XS fold down seats removed. Mantec Storage cages mounted over both wheel boxes. 2nd fire extinguisher. Mantec Load-Lugger shelf mounted to internal gutter rails, modified to allow camp table to slide under shelf. LED lighting above both Gull-wing window openings and above rear door. 12 and 240 Volt sockets. Full length 1.1metre Mobile Storage Systems sliding rear door with Mobile Storage Systems standard chest mounted above. ARB 47litre fridge/freezer. (perfect working order). ARB CKTMA12 100% duty cycle twin compressor mounted inside, 15litre air tank outside, gauge, coupling, switch in GMB Fender locker.

Water. In total 80Litres of drinking water is available. Mounted on the front bumper is a Life-Saver water purifying jerry can, allowing any water to be purified and they transferred to ‘clean’ storage, this can be removed leaving the bumper unaffected. A Front-Runner 40litre water tank is mounted to the roof rack and plumped to a tap by the rear door, tap fitted with a standard hose-lock fitting allowing it to be back filled by connecting to a hose. 20litre Jerry can with tap mounted to the spare wheel carrier through the centre of the wheel (removable to allow Spare wheel access).

Tent: Roof tent: Tuff-Trek Model TT-02 (MK.2). It is 2x1.4 metres giving almost a queen size bed, the mattress is 80mm thick. ALWAYS fully dried/aired after any trip/camp. Improvements: Under the mattress is an anti-condensation mat as used on yachts. 12 Volt DC is supplied to the tent via a military grade power socket umbilical cord into the vehicle roof providing USB charging, 12v sockets, LED lighting. A flexible 60mm pipe connects via quick release coupling to the base of the roof tent and Eberspacher heater providing hot air to the tent and/or the annex below. Ladder mountings improved to allow removal of the ladder when using the annex. Ladder fitted with quick fist clamps to allow easy storing and swift deployment of tent sprung poles and Tuff-Trek storm pole. Directly below the Roof tent is the large annex, known as the ‘living room’! Giving a large dry place to sit etc, heated air is also supplied here. An LED light in the underside of the tent provides lighting and a large zipped access panel allows access to the Front -Runner gull wing window. ‘Living room’ is stored in a Front-Runner HD bag and stored on the roof rack. Tuff-Trek 2 metre 270degree fold out awning. During the winter months (Nov-Feb) the mattress is removed from the tent and stored in our home while the entire roof rack inc tent, awning and all attached fittings are removed and storage in a dry unit at my work, preventing any prolonged unnecessary exposure to wet weather. Currently the roof rack is off but will be refitted before the sale (only takes 20mins with 6 guys)

Included additional/overland equipment: Two folding camping chairs.. Coleman twin petrol stove with brand new regulator. Jormax Wind break, very expensive and never used. HD jump leads with Anderson plug. 10 metre airline. 10 metre electric hook up cable inc waterproof RCD. Flat-Dog waterproof seat covers. Bench Vice (record) with tow hitch mounting bracket

The Bad bits: There aren’t many as I have always corrected any issues ASAP. However as the Landrover has been used for overlanding there are a couple of minor dents and scratches to the paintwork, a dent to the rear top corner above the near side small window and a dent to the near side wing. Both totally cosmetic. One alloy lightly scratch.
There is loads more to this truck than any advert could portray. I have owned it from new, treated with continual mechanical sympathy and it has wanted for nothing.

As you can see the specification is extensive, immaculate very low mileage rare 1 owner Defender 90 2.2 XS. Expedition prepared that benefits from only 42,000 genuine miles. In stunning condition throughout, the bodywork is great, interior immaculate and the chassis/underside is totally corrosion free, the Defender has been cherished from new and no expense spared on its professional build into the ultimate expedition truck. Its not to be missed.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
