Tamrac 5547
Can anyone reccomend one of these for my fathers christmas present.
Doesn't need to survive the Dakar but must carry his DSLR in comfort on his pushbike.

I would give him vouchers to be honest, backpacks are a personal thing, my ex had a tamrac that she found very uncomfortable to carry hillwalking[also heavy] but loved the lowe, I was happy with both, but then I can be happy with most backpacks. Messanger bags are also good I have a very large crumpler, the strap is set up so it will stay fixed in place no matter what you are doing, it will carry a 17 inch laptop, 2 camera bodies 4-5 lenses including large ones and whatever else, it also doubles up as a small dog carrier, when I need to sneak him into town on the bus. Will also carry 24 cans/bottles of no problem.

I'm using one of these at the moment. I believe KATA used to make gear for the Israeli Army, it sure feels Army tough. I use it when I'm on my MTB and it's quite comfortable.
Kata DR-465i Camera Backpack
I've also got a Thinktank holster 20 which holds my DSLR with the lens on it...
Think tank photo Digital Holster 20
Thinktank also do backpacks. They're serious bits of kit I could recommend their gear.

Sorry,
i am a liitle bit late for this posting.
But maybe somewhere else will have a look for a photo bag.
Here is a adress in the internet, where you can have a look to nearly all photo bags:
www.taschenfreak.de - Fototaschen und mehr ...
its a german site, but the pictures will everyone understand
my extra advice: the tamrac expedition 4 5574 -
TAMRAC EXPEDITION 4 - 5574
- fits perfectly in most tankbags. So you can put the whole photo bag in your Tankbag - it is very safe inside - and when you want to go somewhere, one grip/pick and you have all your equipment with you without pulling up the complete tankbag.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
