Dirtbiking East Java, Indonesia with video

I went on a dirtbike roadtrip around Bali and East Java in Indonesia with my friend in sept 2016. We rented 2 Kawasaki KLX 150 in Kuta, Bali.

We made our way to East Java from Kuta on the first day. We took the inland route to Bubunan where we met local bikers. We followed them for while but there were going so fast in the tight and twisty roads that we lost them after a while. We met them later when one of them had a small crash. He was fine but his sports bike had some body work damage. After a food stop in Bubunan, we followed the coast all the way to Gilimanuk. The road was smooth and fast.

The ferry crossing at Gilimanuk was a nice experience. You go through a Police checkpoint before boarding the ferry. We were told that they can pick on tourist sometimes but It went really well for us. After parking the bikes on the ferry, we sat in the aircon room.

We finished the day at the Santika Hotel in Banyuwangi. We stayed there for 3 nights and went to the top of Mount Ijen crater and down the sulfur mine. We were able to take our bike to the Mount Ijen parking at 1800m. Thank you google map.

We left Banyuwangi hoping to go as far as possible to Malang. We went up a road crossing Mount Ijen and Mount Raung and then all the way down until we stopped for lunch in Bondowoso.

It was a very hot day so we reluctantly accepted 2 ice cold from the eager waiter.. we quickly came to the conclusion than more was needed so it was best to call it a day a drink more by the pool.

The next day we made our way to Malang by highway 1 on the coast. Highway 1 is pure hell, you can only overtake constantly or you will be overtaken constantly. I've seen my fair share of chaos when we did a 4000km around Vietnam but this is on another level. We made it to Malang just before sunset and celebrated that we made it in one piece on the hotel rooftop terrace with a tower while listening to the sweet sounds of the many mosque's minarets.

We spent the next to days joy riding Mount Bromo.

Mount Bromo, is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif, in East Java, Indonesia. Alt 2,329 meters.

We started off in Malang and made our way to the summit passing through many villages. After paying for our entry ticket we rode down into valley and crossed a sea of volcanic sand. We rode up the the crater and climbed up the stairs to the edge of the crater. The view incredible

Next we went to visit the Pura Luhur Poten temple and then rode back up on the other side of the valley to the viewpoint.

On the way up we met local dirtbikers and they showed us their trail back to their village. We really went out of our comfort zone following those guys but its was worth it in the end. What an amazing day.

I made a video of our second day on Mount Bromo

After that it was time to ride back to Bali. We wisely rode back from the other side of java and it was a great day of riding. We stopped at a remote waterfall. The locals went nuts when they saw us arrive on our dirtbikes.

We rode on beautiful tarmac on twisty road south of mount Semeru, it was pure pleasure. We took a wrong turn at one point and ended up to a new 4 lane coastal road just for our self. We went full throttle, looking at the many rice field, for a few km until we reached the end and what followed was a very bad dirt road. When looked up google map I realise we went off course but we were not too far from highway 3. With the help of some locals we manage to find our way through the maze like small trails back to the main road. We spent the night in Genteng.

From there we rode back to Ubud for a night and then back to Kuta.

All in all an awesome trip. Next one: India & Nepal

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
