We are expecting some bad weather with very heavy rain at times for the next couple of days and so we got ourselves a fantastic 3 bedroom 2 bath apartment 200 m from the cathedral in Leon. We are excited to have some chef Orvar cooked meals and a comfortable place to hang out. We also have an underground garage so Dan can get a nail out of his tire that he picked up 2 days ago on his Leon loop. The tire was surprisingly holding air. Orvar is also in desperate need of a chain and sprockets and he found a great shop here A Todo Gas who will do the work while we are here.

Leon is a very nice walled city with a cathedral that has some of the most amazing stained glass in Europe.

Today we set out with partly cloudy skies and 14 degrees, but at highway speed that is pretty cool. The rain coats helped as well as a few coffee stops. Even from the highway the Spanish countryside is beautiful. You pass thru or by a number of medieval cities along the 365 km. We had initially planned to ride the last leg to Plasencia over the mountains for 90 km but when we got to the decision point it was already 10 degrees and we had a lot of ascent yet.

From the new town below you can access the main highway again and it continues downhill so much that 10 minutes later it was a comfortable 20 degrees. We continued on the 30 km to Plasencia where our accommodation had a nice view of the city. It’s just a 15 min walk into the old walled city.

The temperature was a cool 14 degrees this morning with mostly cloudy skies. We dressed in layers and added our rain suits for wind dampening. In the end we just had a few showers. Today’s ride is 332 km and is up and down over maintain passes and thru the Douro wine region. This route is said to be in the too 20% of motorcycle rides in Europe. It’s was an amazing ride, but a sunny day would have made it epic. The roads were very curvy and there was very little traffic. We ended the day in Vila Real where we found a very nice 4* boutique hotel at a very 2* price. Not too many photos today so you will have to check out the video below. Tomorrow we get the fab 4 back together.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
