Germany daytrip - Bavaria around Fränkische Alb and Altmühltal

What a georgous riding day yesterday. I started in Sulzbach - Rosenberg near Amberg with its historic city center heading southwest in B 299 toward Eichstätt heading into the hilly country side known as the Fränkische Alb passing the beautiful historic villages of Berching with its beautiful city gates and Beilngries along the way. Eichstätt is a stunningly barock city with a very imposing city center and huge castle overlooking the historic downtown area.

Eichstätt is located in the midle of the marvelous Altmühltal, located some 50 km south of Nuremberg near the Autobahn A 9. The river Altmühl who gives the valley its name is a small and slow flowing river carving its way through a lovely valley with many enchanted villages along the way. The roads are small and curvy, the tarmac very good in most places. I stopped at a grocery store in a village along the river to by some bread rolls, ham and soda to have a picnic type lunch along the river and under a shady tree. Awesome.

The whole area with its small historic villages, castles and valley is very pretty and pure bliss to ride. So pretty in fact I went back and forth a couple of times through the valley enjoying the scenery. On the other end of the Altmühltal are the two incredible historic towns of Teuchtlingen and super nice Weißenburg in Bayern. I never got off the bike but either of the towns and villages would warrant a on foot exploration as they are truly stunning. Not to mention the restaurants and gartens to sample local food and .

From here I went up north in a landscape that became more flat as I moved out of the hills of the Fränkische Alb on B 13 passing beautiful historic Gunzenhausen and the ancient city of Ansbach to the village of Oberdachstetten were I turned east heading towards Fürth and Nürnberg over lovely curvy backcountry roads through a forest bypassing the urban sprawl of the large cities of Fürth and Nürnberg heading back east toward Sulzbach - Rosenheim on B 14. Along the way with plenty of daylight hours left and great weather I decided to take a small detour on a winding road from Hersbruck to Neuhaus a.d.P. through a beautiful enchanted shaded valley with curvy roads a plenty following a small river reaching the town of Auerbach i.d.O. before heading back to Sulzbach - Rosenheim in B 85.

Along the way on B 85 I felt a little tired and hungry and was on a lookout for some shade where I found and stopped at a bunch of big trees in the fields for some food and a chill moment or two. What a beauty.

All in all it was a 440 km riding day. With one fuel stop, a shopping and a pit stop, a picnic along a lovely river and some chill time under some big shady trees. It took me 8 hours of pure bliss to do.

I got some images on my #knorkemopete instagram account.

A thought - perhaps you could add some of these great places to the HU Destinations?!

Thanks!

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
