Africa to Europe
Hi this is my first post
My mate and I are planning on riding from Cape town to London in 2017 as he lives in South Africa and i'm in the UK and are looking at the route/s that we could take up through the country.
while i'm sure there are many hurdles to come the first is the transit from Africa to the Europe mainland, after doing a fair amount of research there are only two possibilities
Eastside (Nile Route) which takes us to Egypt where as far as I can tell there is no longer a ferry to Europe. But I have found that there appears to be one from Israel to Greece.
Does anyone know if this is running and doable? (what with the Syrian conflict) or is there an alternative?
If not then it appears that we are left with the Westside which ends in Morocco which is fine as there are plenty of ferry crossings to the Europe mainland but my question about this route is how viable it is as most of the recent forum posts and info I can find tend to be heading south and stop at Mauri or Dakar but no further.
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the HUBB, I moved your post here where it will get more attention.
You are right - there are basically east and west side routes which diverge (at the northernmost point) in Zambia and end in Egypt or Morocco.

Well people are using it. It has developed because of the Syrian conflict which it avoids. The alternative would be flying your bike out from wherever you like.

In the Sahara forum maybe, but in the sub-Sahara forum there is more info. Even then, the recent perceived perils of Ebola and Boko Haram have slowed overlanding on this route to a trickle. In fact people get through fine - hanging around for expensive, hoop-jumping visas has more of an impact. Whichever your direction, getting an Angola visa for more than a few days rushed transit, is the biggest hurdle.

Ferries
Hi
I'm planning the same trip just North to South end of this year.
There is apparently a ferry from Turkey to Egypt look at this forum.

I haven't contacted them yet because i still haven't finally decided East or West.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Paul, I think travellers gave up on that unreliable and expensive service over a year ago.
It may resume (or it may be running again) but most find it's less hassle to ferry out of Israel as it's a reliable service. Everywhere else seems to manage OK, but anything to do with Egyptian borders gets complicated. Add a ferry and the frustration multiplies.
Many swear they'll never visit Egypt again because of border aggro.

I'm also hoping to cross over from Europe to East Africa later this year.
I've been researching the Greece - Israel or Cyprus - Israel ferry a little bit, the Salamis company is the only company I have found running these ferries. Has anyone had any experience using this ferry route? It would be nice to hear about the experience?
