Welcome to the HUBB, I moved your post here where it will get more attention.
You are right - there are basically east and west side routes which diverge (at the northernmost point) in Zambia and end in Egypt or Morocco.

Does anyone know if this is running and doable? (what with the Syrian conflict) or is there an alternative?

Well people are using it. It has developed because of the Syrian conflict which it avoids. The alternative would be flying your bike out from wherever you like.

most of the recent forum posts and info I can find tend to be heading south and stop at Mauri or Dakar but no further.

In the Sahara forum maybe, but in the sub-Sahara forum there is more info. Even then, the recent perceived perils of Ebola and Boko Haram have slowed overlanding on this route to a trickle. In fact people get through fine - hanging around for expensive, hoop-jumping visas has more of an impact. Whichever your direction, getting an Angola visa for more than a few days rushed transit, is the biggest hurdle.
