Anyone used the National Geographic maps?
Hi all,
People tell me Rough Guide Maps are good but they're not so cheap and I can't find a map for Chile - can get new NatGeo maps from Amazon very cheaply, but just wondering if they're any good??? Anyone use them? I'm mainly looking at S.America, i.e. Chile, Argentina, Peru, etc.
Cheers,
RTW

Rough Guide maps are the same as Reise Kniow-How maps There're seven in stock at Stamfords at £9.50. Not cheap but they are good.

The NatGeo maps are more like £6.49 - any experiences with them? I'll probably go for the Reise Maps, thanks for the link, unless anyone reckons the NatGeo are just as good?

Normal touring maps for Chile and Argentina are readily available in fuel outlets and will be good enough unless you are really going to go bush. Trouble is, especially for the minor roads, there will always be minor discrepancies from one map to another, but never enough to worry about.

I have no experience with NatGeo maps but have also had the Reise maps recommended to me. If you really want the most up to date, I'm told contacting Reise directly is the way to go.

I have a Nat geo map of Panama and it is essentially worthless, if it is the same series of maps I am.familiar with.

Nat Geo maps for SA are good. I used them in Chile, Argentina and Bolivia.

Using a Nat Geo map for Mexico right now and have found it's fairly current with road locations and surfaces. However, the country size is so large that the scale is skewed, especially for topographic lines and turns/twists on roads and most curvy roads in mountainous areas are shown as straight or only slightly wavy lines. It caught me off-guard at first when trying to plan travel times, but I learned quickly. We have the Central American one as well, and I assume we will run into a similar problem.
We liked the maps because they are more tear and water proof than some others and it is holding up really well. Overall I am happy with them.
