I'm planning riding from Australia to the UK, setting off between November - January, no firm dates yet.

From Australia I plan shipping to Dili and ride up through Asia to Thailand.

At Thailand I am stuck. I am looking for the cheapest way around to continue the trip.

I'd like to ride through Myanmar to India/Nepal but I'd need to pay for a guide and need a Carnet. From India the best route would be Pakistan then Iran? Not sure on the safety Pakistan and Iran would require to pay for a guide in Iran having a UK passport so more cost. The other option would be Pakistan -> China -> Krygyzstan, again not sure about saftey or cost for china?

Another option would be from Thailand through China to the stanz, again that would come at a large cost.

Are they any other reasonable options from Thailand?

Thought I'd say G'day.
.l am planning a similar route Syd,Dar, Dili, south east Asia,Myanmar, India, now trying to decide how to proceed from there.
Or maybe ship Syd to Vlad then head west.
But still undecided , but will start early 2017
I am based in Syd where abouts in Oz are you.

There are also cost effective routes Thailand to Japan, however Japan is expensive and you also need a Carnet.

You will need a carnet to take your bike through India and Iran (not sure about Pakistan, check the HUBB).

I know the dates are off but just in case:

Crossing Myanmar will cost around $1000+ if you get a group tour with a few other people. I am planning to cross it in September and am in the process or organising a group. After we get a group we will find a tour. There are also rumours that the guide for the Myanmar crossing will not be required after September. This is currently unconfirmed.

Australia to Thailand is straight forward via Indonesia/Singapore/Malaysia. Myanmar will be bit expensive as guided tour are mandatory.But there are lot of threads in HUBB where people are trying to form groups and reduce cost for the same.Minimum it might go to 700-800 $ from what i have heard.

I am also planning India to UK from July to September this year,shipping my bike to Iran from Mumbai to Bandar Abbas.Costing me a bomb (1200 $) but there is no other option.

Biru, you said that it's straight forward from Aus to Thai. My girlfriend and I are starting to plan Aus to UK and need to get on to it really quickly.

I am struggling to find ferry crossings in to and around Indo. Do you have any information? or could you point us in the right direction?

There are afaik no ferries into Indo. Your best choice going from Aus to UK is probably to ship your bike from Darwin to Dili in East Timor. And then you ride into West Timor which is Indonesia. And from there its easy peacy. Its ferries between every indonesian island. And it depends also what route youre plan to ride. The most common route is in your direction West Timor - Flores - Sumbawa - Lombok - Bali - Java - Sumatra. Then you will need to ship your bike over to Malaysia from Sumatra. But its no big deal, there are several options. Mr Lims famous/infamous onion boat from Belawan to Penang or on a passanger ferry Port Klang - Dumai.
Another and more adventorous option is to take a ferry from Flores to Sulawesi and then another ferry from Sulawesi to Borneo and then find freight over to mainland/peninsula Malaysia.

There is a guy who posted quite exact ferry information between indonesian islands here. I will try to find it and post it...

Good luck with your trip and dont forget to get a 60 day visa to Indonesia before you go. The normal 30 days are by no means not enough to get through Indonesia.

This is the guy I mentioned in my other post. He has pretty much nailed the route from Malaysia to Darwin.

I can add that from Timor to Flores there are ferries from Kupang to other destinations on Flores than Larantuka. There are ferries to Ende and to Aimere.

Japan is definitely and option and you can take the ferry from Hokkaido to the Russian island of Sakhalin and go to the mainland from there. But Japan is not expensive and you do not need a Carnet.

Fuel costs about the same as in Russia and you can basically live out of the 7/11's for 10 to 15 euros a day and up to three hours of internet outside with an outlet. Bottle of Whiskey 7 euros. Food is fantastic even the lower tier places and a meal there puts you back 4/7 euros, very reasonable. There are rest stops all over the country with great facilities and most of them have grass spots where you can pitch your tent. If you can't find a place keep riding until you find some grass slightly out of sight. This is Japan, no one will hassle your tent ever. I've set it up right next to pavements going to the public toilets at the public rest stops. In the cities is where things can get more expensive but up to you how much. Hostels are 20/25 euro's a night. Last minute online hotel bookings in cities like Tokyo can be as low as 40 euros.

As for the Carnet I had the option to use one but did not. A temporary import sufficed at the same cost. This was 2014. Amazing country to tour and there is more beautiful nature and great roads than there is urbanization.

I am Perth based and looking to do the same - darwin - Indo (ship to malaysia as no ferry) - malaysia - poss ship to nepal then onwards (ship from pakistan to georgia) then through Turkey and EU and UK UK.


What i found out is.... Indonesia seems hard but do able until island opposite Malaysia (no ferry).
From Malaysia Thailand is now not worth it given costs of needing a tour operator, Myanmar again very expensive now needing same as Thailand.

If your British you need a tour operator through Iran as well and again very costly.

looks like a continuous journey on this route is too costly, too early in the year to go north to China/Russia

Any ideas welcomed but looks to me that the days of motorcycling overland is starting to close off.

Another idea is to fly and rent a scooter in each island in Indonesia, Rent a big bike in Thailand, dirt bike Myanmar and rent a bullet in India. This in itself could take a while. Not as an achievement but an option. renting in the countries like Thailand, Myanmar would add to the cost and shipping too many times are killers.

Carnets in Oz are easy to get though.

Maybe I'm not great at planning trips though with what I have found
