Tiger,

I have been researching this area for my 2014 trip. Yes, you can drive from Krasnoyarsk to Severobaikalsk, via Tayshet, Bratsk and Ust Kut.

If you look at the map below, you'll see that there are two options between Tayshet and Bratsk - either the 'longer' road marked in yellow then red or the 'short cut' via Chanskly. I'm told that the 'short cut' can be difficult, particularly in the wet.

I can't tell you anything regarding boats or ferries from Severobaikalsk but it is possible to drive south to Irkutsk via track roads. You would need to back track from Severobaikalsk toward Ust Kut to pick up one of the track that go south. The map shows a track road that runs south from Ulkan (on road between Severobaikalsk and Ust Kut) and meets up with a secondary road from K a c h u g (spaced to avoid emoticon automatically replacing 'chug') to Irkutsk. There is another track (old logging road) that runs south from Ust Kut to Zhigalovo and on to Irkutsk.

There are a couple of paper maps that you might find useful - the Reise Know How map for ‘Russia from the Urals to Lake Baikal’ map which has a scale of 1:2,000,000 (1:2 Mill) and the Reise Know How map of ‘Lake Baikal’ which has a scale of 1:550,000.

Regards,

Craig

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
